Two offers. Same comp. 1 - Principal Level manager at a FANG company. (Mid level manager at a prestigious tech company) Or 2 - VP level manager at a non-tech company. For example: Macy's, ADP, Nickelodeon, UPS... (Have a prestigious title and responsibilities but at a non tech but brand name company)
Non tech companies rarely have upside potential thesedays
Define upside? Doing well at any reasonably large company means you're pulling in some decent cash.
FANG. Without question.
Why?
Yo, so here's what I think. FANG principal engineer is a lot of learning, on the latest/near latest technologies, learning best practices from your DEs / technical fellows etc, clear viewpoint on the next 5 year vision for your space (like say if I work in streaming analytics, I'd know exactly what comes after spark, storm, flink etc), highly transferable job etc. VP at a non tech company: you are a cost center and not the primary revenue generator (unlike FANG which makes money because of you), you will have to fight for budgets, your tech will be at least a decade behind (2 decades if it's not banking or media), and you'll be the extreme alpha superior tech guy there (which means 5 years later you'll be worse off than FANG peers, no DE/fellow to learn from), and jobs highly non transferable. You can go to that VP job anyways, but you most likely can't get back to FANG principal after five years there.
If the comp is similar - FANG!
I'll take the VP of junk, since you can get hired later as cxo of some medium size tech company
What's the scope of the VP role? If much larger i.e. 200+ org vs 8 direct reports, go VP no question. Much easier path to CTO and super high comp
Gotta go to FANG, all about FANG, TC, and leetcode #blindrepresent

Fang. More growth opportunities. If comp is same you optimize for growth. I think my answer will remain the same unless the other offer is at least 50% higher.
Damn. That's a good answer
How did you arrive at the 50% number?
