Great article! https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/a-sociologist-examines-the-white-fragility-that-prevents-white-americans-from-confronting-racism/amp?__twitter_impression=true PS - Please read before commenting.
What the fuck did I just read
...so...all white people are racist - and the ones who deny it are white racist snowflakes?
Nah, just that white people have been conditioned by politics and the media to believe this is a fair and colorblind society. So they tend to get real anxious when anyone brings up systemic racism in society... like some people get all defensive and think if anyone mentions general racism against blacks then they’re saying all white people as individuals are at fault.
White people are snowflakes. This is a fact.
Great article. I would argue it's the same for non white people in other countries where they are the majority discriminating against a minority. Racism is predominantly non overt, everyone has some racist beliefs. The point is to catch yourself when you feel yourself acting a certain way and give the minority a break. It's scary but can be rewarding.
Whites confront racism all the time. Just seems like they're not confronting racism in the way (usually white) social justice warriors want them to. But it's all people talk about these days so what's not being confronted?
What way is that?
In the bizzaro-universe way where any mention of general discrimination in society against non-whites is somehow construed as bigotry against white people.
What’s racist is telling me I’m a racist because I’m white and white people won’t confront racism. Oh and yeah - a general observation about white people is racist
No one is talking about YOU specifically. The article is a general observation about a group.
General observation about a group .... lol That is racist dumb ass
If you’re white and you feel triggered because of reading this article then you’re proving the very point of this article. Calm down, this is not about you. You are not at fault. This is about looking at the bigger picture, at a time scale of 100s of years, at a demographic scale of millions of people, at a power structure that has existed for centuries and subtly (and in some cases not so subtly) benefits you to this day. It’s about taking cognizance of that. It’s about not “othering” people of color, it’s about not normalizing whiteness as the default, its about showing some sense of empathy etc etc.
Funnily the triggered reactions were exactly how the author of the article described them too.
Generalize a group and write they will not like being generalized, GENIUS
