What r good recommendations for my career?

I am 30 year old Mechanical engineer from UW, with 5 of experience as designer at a mid level size composite engineer/fabrication in greater seattle area. Salary doesn’t grow as much as I wanted, and it looks that it’s pretty limited unless I go into managing. What are some other good places to work for in seattle area. I been with Boeing for 6 months, I am worried it’s a little slow and boring, I like the smaller teams and company structures. Or should I go back to school and get programming degree ( it’s not going to be easy, I have kids now), cuz these seem to pay better? Just looking for ideas... I can read and write in Russian, maybe that could be beneficial.

T-mo is the fastest growing carrier I believe could be an option for OP

I am surprised that’s the only mistake, it’s 12 am. Thanks

Atnt is a decent enough carrier.

Spelling

All this chatter about typos 😒 OP I’d suggest finding a startup where they are building things from scratch. That will require some innovation and startups tend to have less bureaucracy and structure. Probably you might find that more intellectually stimulating.

I would think there’d be lots of cool opportunities right now in aerospace - Boeing, Alaska, SpaceX — lots of the “Software” companies end up needing mechanical work when they build physical products, too. Sort of depends on what you want to do. If that’s just to make money and support your family, shift to software and don’t look back.

Goal 1: make enough for comfortable living. Goal 2: don’t hate my work. And I don’t want it to be stressful and require much overtime. I heard a lot of young engineers work double the hours at big places, get paid very well but they only last 5 years. I wouldn’t want to be in that place.

Honestly I wish sometimes I had a background to do engineering at Boeing. Are there different areas of the company you can go to which might offer more excitement/growth/pay? It has a longstanding reputation of being a good place for the “family man” doesn’t it? Or Microsoft — we like to make fun of them at Amazon but those people really love the work life balance over there. They do make hardware and so need Mech E’s for drafting layout, all of that kind of stuff.

I am surprised AT&T and T-mobile came up. Is it because “utility” companies would pay better most of the time?

Amazon 🌲fitty Aug 19, 2018

We were just making fun off your spelling mistake; carrier like “mobile phone carrier.”

I think you can easily learn to code on your own, I wouldn't recommend going back to school. Good programming requires experience, and it's likely that you won't be hired for 100k+ jobs right away. Try to see if you can take online courses from Udemy, Pluralsight etc?

Leave Seattle move to Louisiana or East Texas and double your pay.

You could look for a hardware startup, but there aren't too many of those in Seattle. (Xevo is all that comes to mind.) If you want to avoid the Bay Area, you might look at Houston if you can tolerate the weather. You'd have lots of high paying options, small companies or big, much lower cost of living, and the food is better than Seattle.
