What should I expect in Denver?

May 5, 2019 26 Comments

If I’m moving from the bay, in my 20s, and Indian American?

This is what I’m thinking will be different:
Less diversity
Lower pay
Lower col
Great access to the outdoors

What am I missing? Has anyone here done this move?

Colorado has a very healthy lifestyle. If you are single, you can probably date some of the coolest chicks out there. Lots of 8 and 9s.

Definitely less diverse. Definitely lower pay. Definitely lower col (renting) but housing prices are high. And YES the outdoors activities available are amazing and plentifull. Sunlight every day.

It’s never easy making friends in a new city. It’s very difficult in Seattle or the Bay Area because the people are very difficult and transient.

Denver is quite friendly I’ve found. Love it more every time I visit. It’s a large metropolitan area. They will have a bit of everything for you.

This is true. But it is harder if you do not have like minded people near you.

Well if you narrow the filter far enough, you’ll struggle finding like minded people anywhere. I’ve learned the hard way. Point is you need to be open. All the people I know in Denver are Indian for example, and they love it there. I’m white and find the Bay Area to be the absolute most difficult area to meet people and build good friendships. It’s getting easier after year 4, but it was rough for a while.

What I noticed in Denver is people will actually say hello to you and smile. Striking up small talk was easy. That doesn’t happen here.

If diversity is the most important factor, move to queens. Most diverse place on the planet. No place of perfect, but the only two places I’d leave the bay are for us Denver and Austin. And I like Denver a hell of a lot more than Austin.

Yeah that’s true. To clarify I’m not only looking for Indian friends haha. My friends are Indian, Asian, Latino, etc. I’ve always lived in the bay so can’t really relate to your current struggles but I’m sorry that was the case. 😕 You’re right that it makes a difference if people are open and friendly. I’m glad to hear you thought people in Denver were like that. I had a similar experience in Chicago but it’s too damn cold to live there haha.

Lol. Well I can say I’ve found a good niche of Filipino, Indian, Israeli, and Iranian friends here. Most of the white crowd just hasn’t really clicked for whatever random reason. I’m looking for educated people like myself and definitely found value in diversity.

What I can say about Denver is it’s a very young and entrepreneurial city. People are laid back and friendly. Great beer, food, and sports culture. Unbeatable outdoors. You will find stupid people there, like any city. I can’t say it’s as diverse as the Bay Area, but it’s one of the best kept secrets in the US when it comes to the total package.

Good luck with your decision either way.

No where near as bad. That dry powder melts and evaporates quickly the next day with all the sunshine and low humidity. But it is a long and cold winter. Skiing is prime though.

Expect the average intelligence of the males you date to be dramatically less; also expect them to be much less driven or aggressive. (Source: work-aholic, straight married male who moved here recently ... feel like everyone is checked out most of the time, or stoned)

I just visited. It was very different than I thought. The altitude sickness really got to me. And it was SO DRY. Sand storms all around us. I liked it though and would visit again. Lots of nice people and so much to do
