Saw someone with that job title and it sounds like a weird role to me. Are they respected among engineers? What’s their TC compared to eng? Are they similar to TPMs?
Do these people actually get paid bu Google? Like do they really work for google like contractors? Or is it just a stamp of approval from google open source projects?
They definitely get paid by google, they speak on behalf of google at conferences
They work at Google. A lot give developer talks and stuff at conferences.
I wouldn't say they are highly respected.

on other companies they are also known as -thought leader -evangelist -subject matter expert i have friends who are "advocates" on these principal companies and they blog, tweet, travel and speak on conferences+user groups, even create youtube videos on their area of expertise

There is a lot of them in the open source game the general feeling I get is that if contrubitor or committer to a large popular OSS project they get hired by X company to show that “hey we this many committers/contributors to this project” and/or to push codebase changes that will support or improve support for there platform
