What’s a good salary for fully remote? Are there any companies that don’t adjust for cost of living? Are there any companies that pay anywhere close to New York and California rates for fully remote? I live in a low cost area in the central time zone and have no desire to move at this time. I just got a job offer for 165k fully remote. Is this considered good for fully remote? It’s somewhat better than my current salary but my current salary also includes some equity of unknown value. YOE 20. current base salary 120k. TC 120k+

For 20 yoe, I'd expect you could find more than double that. The list of places is really small. I'd agree with targeting bay area companies. My neighbor with 6yoe is getting 180k+monopoly money from a startup. Meta pays well for remote, they adjust for COL, but it's still higher than most other offers that don't adjust. Reddit and LinkedIn don't adjust I believe. I think Twitter and Spotify are good for remote. I think Uber pays really well for remote, not sure if they adjust or not though.

Also, when I say you could find double. I'm not saying you're getting ripped off. In my book your best offer is a good one until you get a better one. It's just that while it's easier to find remote work from a LCOL area than ever, not everyone pays California rates and remote still isn't like in the bay area where any LC monkey gets a 300k offer.

It's surprising your neighbor is open with you about their finances.

He asked about meta pay first, probably felt like he should reciprocate. Also more to the relationship than just neighbor, but don't need to go into it on blind. I'm from a smaller LCOL area with fewer dev opportunities. Being open helps devs not being taken advantage of. A better dev than me with the same yoe i talked to was making like 70k. Without salary transparency it's easy to end up in a 🥜🏭. Median household income is ~60k here. So when people get offered 45k out of college they take it because it's more than their parents ever made even if it's way below market.

I also live in central time zone and have worked full remote since the pandemic. Before that I lived in SF and worked for a couple companies out there, including a FAANG company. Work for a company based out of SF with a full remote workforce, and they are paying competitive rates, I wouldn’t let a company set your pay based on location, since there are plenty of companies not doing that.
