What's going on at Amazon? Hiring spike (SWE)

May 26, 2021 42 Comments

I've been getting inundated with amazon recruiters lately. Used to be maybe once or twice a year but I'm seeing sometimes 2 different ones in same week (I thought they're only allowed to have one active recruiter per candidate at a time). Today I even got a cold call from an Amazon recruiter.
So what's going on?
Massive expansion? Too many people pipped and need backfill? Too many people moving to other companies due to remote work?

You gotta hire fast if you plan to make up for the wave of recent hires that already got laid off again with less then a month in.
If you have internal turnover goals you need more people you can fire right away again.

Yeah I had no motivation to leetcode. But being here everyday reminds me to LC so that one fine day I don't belong to this visibility centered place.

@Zillow, I have heard horrible things about Amazon long before Blind but the hire-to-fire thing is new to me. It seems like such an enormous waste of people's time and the company's resources.

Can confirm our team cannot hire any SDE2 in Seattle. Candidates took the interview but usually bailed after getting an offer or speaking with the SDM. SDM is clueless.

There are no good projects. It's only promo based architecture.
No one actually works. All about visibility.
Low hiring bar. Less motivation as people just do the assigned job.
TPM converting into SDM. Don't have proper vision.

Exactly, my manager told me to upgrade AL2012 to AL2 by end of that working day. It is hard and I deleted the old one immediately without much backup and spent another whole week to setup all thing in the new env.

I already have an offer lined up, leaving next month. There is on average a person leaving the org every 2 weeks (tracking farewell emails).
I was appalled when our director said out loud that because of the pandemic layoffs we could hire L6+ cheaper and closed all L4 and L5 reqs. Of course that was not the case and we still have backlog of open positions unable to fill.

Not comfortable sharing specifics. Moving from FAANG to MULA, from not bay area to bay area😅

The past 2 months my org has had a similar cadence - slightly higher. Around 1-2 per sprint. Plus another just pinged me from my immediate team asking how to talk to their manager so seems like the cadence is keeping up…
