I’ve interviewed at google, amazon, blizzard ent, but is not working out. Im 35, been working since 2000 (college drop off, self taught), im a ux design lead with years of experience on dev, visual design, digital marketing... am I selling wrong at the interviews, is it too much exp? Should I take off experience from my resume? Im good judge of myself and I know my stuff and im good at what I do... so??? Thanks for any advice
Ux design and Google, give me a break
Elaborate
- login screen of all Google apps, the add account and remove account, is bullshit - Material UI is great on phones, but they just don't suit web interfaces. - show me one place where I can go to without any confusion and just tell Google to not remember history across all services. Where is it? Tell me how you can delete entries from your Google maps history. - logging in to Gmail on chrome forces you to add Google account to calendar. Wtf!!! - Google calendar, still uses basic html elements and buttons - they put material UI on Google search as well, but did a limited trial and maybe removed it because it looked super shitty - Hangouts, confusing piece of shit. Remember the epic time when they tried to merge sms with Hangouts? Big fucking piece of confusing crap. I have more examples I can provide but this is probably enough.
To be picky ... your grammar needs some attention to detail, if your resume reads like your posts it could be hurting you. Every little thing matters.
Do you think this is a big one? English is my second language. Its not perfect by any means but at least on my resume the grammar is alright.
Well Your English is better than any second language of mine, but I would have a native English speaker review, not saying it's the issue but it might help
Did you ask for feedback after your interviews?
I kindly did ask, they didnt provide any
You want to know if you’re selling the wrong thing, but you haven’t told us what you’re selling yet. Pretend I’m the hiring manager. Why should I be interested in you?
Most of the time they want to know things like processes, how i do things, when it comes to what else i bring to the table i talk about how i am multidisciplinary creative with 10 years of exp ( i dont even say 18 maybe they think im like 65 or something haha ) and the different areas i specialize like art direction, ux, digital strategy, visual design and my dev bg. Then i talk about leading projects end to end through design, dev and how my experience helps me communicate with diversely skilled teams effectively and in their langugage. Also how I address any challenges through a creative and technical angle. Idk, maybe they think im a generalist, like someone once told me, and I get thats BS when you have 3 yrs of experience but I literally been there. What you think?
You still haven’t told me what YOU bring. Why you over everyone else who has experience in different areas and thinks e2e. First, prove it. Show me how you did it because everyone can say it, but show me exactly what you did, how, and about the challenges you overcame along the way. Second, with 18 years of experience, I’d expect you to have a strong POV or “angle” that only you could give me. Are you a commodity? Could any other designer give me what you do? If not, why does it have to be you?
- Does your portfolio demonstrate your individual work and contribution to the project? Is it consistent during your portfolio review? Do you only use “we”? - Do you show enough UX on visual design? - Do you spend more time than the guideline on the take home project? - Do you have a clear next step career direction during your interviews? UX design, visual design, and product design can be very different roles.
What phases of the interviews did you make it to for each company? Tell us this and we can start to narrow on possible miscues or solutions.

What roles are you interviewing for specifically - may be able to provide better feedback. Also what industry is your experience in?
Visual Design, UX Design, Product Design As far as industry experience, i’ve done work for startups, nike, verizon, bmw, I did work for 2016 presidential race, mobile games, medical, real estate, insurance, consoles, digital agencies, corporate, i even worked in the adult industry in 2000 which of course i dont mention anywhere on my resume, but lots of things that are happening now where built there. I don’t know what people are looking for maybe they dont want someone with a broad experience but someone more focused on 1 area only? Personally this has help me communicate with all kinds of trades and lead them end to end. At this point not even sure, maybe im old (35)??
Dang - all of that sounds great. Is your resume focused and max 2 pages? Google has a lot of feedback for concise resumes. Killer portfolio is a must. With your experience focus on your top 10, not necessarily all your skills. They may be looking for corporate experience. Maybe? Or potential leads can be intimidated. I’ve experienced a lot of that. In recent searches, I’ve been surprised by the lack of technical knowledge of some design management, but those were good warning signs for me. Some teams are unfortunately superficial. So that could also be an unfortunate factor. :(
