Is there something going on at Airbnb? From what I heard, at least 7 engineers left the company in the past month - sounds like a pretty high turnover rate. From the outside, we only know recent management change - CFO leaving and new COO announcement. Also heard about the controversial high level promotion at eng org last year. Company valuation has been flattish in the past 2 years. Something does not smell right here. Anyone from Airbnb willing to share?
It’s fine, nothing to see here
Lol we have something like 900 or 1000 engineers now, turnover is super low for a company of our size. There’s definitely a little pain because we’re no longer just 200 eng, so it’s not like a family like it used to be. I think that’s why some people left, they typically went to tiny startups. But the culture is still the best and most supportive that I’ve seen anywhere.
How will you grow big or scale if you think going from 200 to 900 engineers is a pain? Are you guys just happy doing what you are doing right now? No plans to create new products or solve different problems? And a company should be a company not a family. What's all this crap about being a family at work
How much more should a website that rents rooms scale ? Craigslist is doing more than that with 50 people.
Morale shitstorm is what it is
Elaborate please?
It’s what you hear, added altogether. China thingy, CFO leaving, immature management, lack of liquidity and stalled growth rate. Put them together and one cannot expect a good morale.
Everything seems fine. It's just bigger now so ofcourse more people would leave too. Regarding valuation, we don't need any funding now so no funding rounds. Without that, investor valuation would remain same. And yes we are trying other things too , not just homes and experiences.
How about the office bully and sexual scandal at Airbnb China late last year?
The funny thing is that the messer is still not fired.
Seeing a ton of Airbnb candidates in the pipeline last month or so. Candidates seem okay. Heard from a friend who is hiring in the DS org that he is seeing even more of an exodus. Apparently there’s a very unpopular head of DS at Airbnb that is trying to make everybody do basic analyst level work instead of building out ML and marketplace Algos/Products.
True
This part I agree. The DS sucks at airbnb. Just look up the background of our head of DS, it’s a joke. But we all know this: airbnb focus way too much on diversity so it’s nothing new
Place is a wreck. Leadership is filled with hypocritical self righteous snakes who aren’t skilled enough (professionally or technically) to do their jobs, and who operate in self preservation mode to protect their best interests (ie rest and vest or slit throats to position themselves for better perf reviews and hence higher refresher amounts and promos). This place is a joke, I kick myself for leaving a great position to come here and for falling for the Airbnb propaganda bullshit. I have an end date in sight and I can’t wait to get the hell out. Airbnb has been riding a great initial idea (that was bound to happen) for years now, but isn’t taking the appropriate steps to survive long term. I don’t have faith Estaff will figure it out before it’s too late.
That said, business still seems to be strong growing with no real competitor. True?
My inbox will probably explode with messages from angry Airbnbers if I comment publicly on growth, but I’ll just say we do have strong competitors who are doing quite well (e.g. booking.com)
Airbnb does annual RSU refreshers at the beginning of year with a one year cliff. So the optimal strategy is to leave at the end of February after cliff, but before investing time into next cliff.
Quit last week too. Had terrible terrible newbie manager. And I’m know Airbnb has a lot managers like that.

It'll probably be fine. I mean everyone was hating on dropbox and snap pre ipo and they've been fine since.
Snap is not doing fine... Had two rounds of layoffs this year already. Dropbox just went public and it is too soon to tell.
True but stock price is still 90% of intended price at IPO for snap. Dropbox people I know seem bullish
