Relocating to the Bay Area soon, and wife is a software engineer as well.
Looking at Rincon Hill as a potential destination, since it has some nice residences while being within walking distance to a lot of tech offices.

I'm already aware of all the horror stories about urine and feces, the homeless, used needles, yada yada. Is it that bad here as well?

Lived at Avery 450. Never seen any needles, feces, urine, etc. only place I’ve seen homeless are under the highway on 1st St & Clementia. It’s otherwise a higher end area, lots of luxury buildings, clean, close to embarcadero, SOMA, salesforce park, etc. Biggest downside for me is not much is open at night time, especially food.

Hmm during the day is OK I think, there’s an OK selection that’s walkable, not a lot but not too little.

Avery 450 was very very nice lol, but very very expensive. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re making enough to comfortably spend that much but if you can oh boy it’s awesome

We are close to Google SF and the streets are wide and relatively clean. We walk to food all the time, during the day and at night.

Avey 450 is co-located with The Avery condo. It is a luxury building. However, I would prefer something closer to the waterfront.

You can also consider renting a condo unit at Lumina or The Infinity. They have concierge service as well.

It’s a ghost town on the weekends. No sense of community. It is also a bit of a food desert, with very few grocery or restaurant options. I would look at south of market or some of the more active neighborhoods. Don’t discount Oakland as well, there are some new developments there.

Personally don't care for community (I have family for that), but lack of food options is a bit concerning. Thanks for the info!
Re your SoMa rec: isn't that where the homeless issues are most dire?

There are lots of young families. We can see people taking a stroll with their kids. There are also many dogs.

Woodlands Market is right there. A bit pricey but it is well-stocked.

There are enough good restaurants within walking distance:
Yank Sing, Ozumo, Prospect, Boulevard, Waterbar, Epic Steakhouse, Perry's, Angler, One Market

On Saturdays, there is a large farmers' market at the Ferry Plaza.

It is awesome. We like it so far.

You can also walk to Ferry Building. There are quite a few good restaurants within walking distance. You can also take the N train or the KT train.

Streets in The East Cut (Rincon Hill) get washed frequently. I do smell urine but it is just as likely from dogs.

Our building has a lot of young families. They feel safe enough to let their kids ride bicycles outside.

I have not seen used needles. There may be a couple of homeless people on the waterfront but they tend to stay away from residential buildings.

Thank you so so much for all your detailed replies! A couple of friends were recommending looking at Potrero instead, but after reading your comments now I'm definitely gravitating towards moving to Rincon :D

We looked at Potrero and Dogpatch as well.

These two areas are great if you are commuting to Mountain View by car or Caltrain.

There may also be a Google Bus serving Potrero, but it has been more than 10 years since I worked for Google.

If you are commuting to Google SF, Potrero is not convenient.

Rincoln Hill is nice. But if you are expecting to walk to bars and coffee shops, options are less. Wouldn’t recommend SOMA at all. If you want live there, perhaps near the ballpark is better or even Mission Bay close to Warriors stadium
