So F1 is NOT a dual intent visa, so you have to say to the Immigration officer that you’ll go back to your country after you’re done with your degree but you can get an OPT after you complete your degree on F1 and then get a dual intent H1B visa easily ? Like wtf ICE/USCIS , aren’t you creating loop holes yourself ? Of course most foreign students will not come to the US if there is no possibility of getting an OPT and working here after getting your degree ( it’s too damn expensive) ... so why not remove the “non-immigrant intent requirement” from the F1 visa ! PS - I have not pursued a degree in the US , I came here directly on a dual intent work visa so I’m sorry if I said something ignorant 😑
H1 and F1 are completely different stories. Plus you shouldn't even be talking. Be thankful that you paid less money for your foreign degree and won the dual intent lottery while students paying hundreds of thousands of dollars didn't.
Why can’t I ask simple questions ? Do I have to be earth to talk about global warming ? Or a dog to talk about animal rights ? You could be thankful that you had the opportunity to study in the US but I guess you’re not the thankful types 🙄
You’re on blind. The community is toxic, and that’s why we love it.
Lot of foreign students come from rich families and have no problem supporting themselves if they did not get OPT.
Which is fine and they may go back to their home country ... I don’t thinks it’s the majority tho ....
So that invalidates your point. We want people who will not become a burden on American taxpayers if they can't find a job. If you can't afford a US education, if you don't have the savings to pay for it, then don't come.
Lots of F1 come to study and go back without working here. It is now a badge of honor to study abroad and go back.
If they can afford it that’s great ... but I see a lot of friends caught in the F1 denials because their spouse is on H1B
I prefer no OPT after F1. Come here, study and go back. If you get H1b then great, otherwise please make your home country great again.
I'm ok with that, but we should reserve a number of the visas for people who got US education. They are better immigrants than people who went to some shitty foreign school.
Imagine if everyone had done that. Who would be here? Natives?
wait so F1 has path to OPT then H1B so what happens if an F1 marries a person that is H1B vs GC vs Citizen?
If F1 married a anyone with dual intent and steps out of the country to get the F1 visa stamped they will be denied the visa because now their intent is not 100% to go back to their home country because their spouse has a dual intent visa
but if married to GC or citizen he/she will eventually get a marriage based restricted GC , right?
I personally think we should take more student graduates and less employment visas. Here's a solution: Chop down the number of h1b every year by excluding the consulting companies. Reserve those visas for graduating students in STEM programs. Not only tech but also medicine and other sciences. Say, set aside half the h1b's for graduating students and accomplish they by eliminating third party employment visas.
I agree with eliminating third party placement, actually. Why don't we write a bill, find someone to introduce it, and see how many cosponsors it gets?
After OPT, not after degree. I agree with making F1 dual intent. It doesn't currently serve a purpose. We want bright folks to stay and less bright folks to leave - this can still be done with dual intent.
