I'm interviewing with FB for NYC L4 SWE (along with Google, Uber, Amazon, and Two Sigma), and from whatever I get, my priorities will be 1. Promotion velocity, 2. TC (but would take anything at F/G/2S over Amazon/Uber) Can someone coming in at L4 make it to Eng Manager within 4 years or so? If not, what's the fastest for very high performer. Also curious about org structure and promotion culture in general at FB NYC - how much the focus is on true impact vs. YOE, what matters most, a lot of politics?, who are the winners/losers, etc. Thanks in advance. TC: 160k (LCOL) YOE: 1 #facebook #fb #nyc #faang #twosigma #google #uber #amazon #faang #promotion #swe
From E4 to EM in 4 years at FB: it’s possible but probabilities are very low. My understanding is that for making the lateral move to EM you would need to each E6. So you would need two promos and a lateral move in 4 years. Even with a high performance (and a good amount of luck) that’s extremely tight. Promo from 5 to 6 is very hard from what I’ve heard due to how ambiguous it is
Thanks for the response! What would you say is a reasonable timeframe for E4 to EM? And is that timeframe E4 > E5 > E6 > M1 or to M0? I heard M0 may be a thing for E5's to become manager?
I’ve also heard about the M0. Although I don’t have details on that one more than the fact that you wouldn’t have reports. Again, it’s highly dependent on team and manager. I know of people that have been promoted from 4 to 5 in one year and others in 4. Not sure how the 5 to 6 looks tho
Hey what position did U apply to at FB? Can’t seem to see anything for 1 YOE folks

Certainly attainable in a lucky scenario although unlikely. NYC is not different from the rest of FB in this regard. Basically favorable outcomes in the PSC process (having the skill and luck to have impact, advocate for yourself, and be represented well by others) would make or break this timeline, though worst case your advancement just gets delayed a few halves anyway. I would encourage you to think about if climbing to manager at a large co. ASAP is what you really want.
Appreciate the insight. Re: manager at FAANG...I think it is what I want professionally in the corporate world..I think Director/VP at FAANG is almost as good as it gets other than a huge company CXO. And the only way to get there is to first get to manager. There are other professional ambitions I have in the area of my own startup for my passions/ideas, but working in tech I see them as something I can always work on as a side hustle or even quit to pursue them and come back if it goes south with no hassle at all and actually appreciation for the effort.
