I have great WLB at Microsoft as a manager. The work is easy peasy and pay is meh (285k on W2 last year). Time spent at work is about 25-30 hrs a week. A few recruiters are pinging me for EM/SDM positions at FANG. According to the data points on Blind, I can easily double my TC, if I pass those interviews. But one thing nobody mentioned is the stress level associated with high TC and high expectation. Can you help me to understand that?
Looks like more people believes managers have higher stress than engineers at FANG. Can someone elaborate?
For starters, there is much more responsibility. While an engineer is responsible for one project, EM is responsible for all of them in the team. Then there's actual people development, up or down. Despite popular belief, kicking people out is no walk in the park either: managers are not soulless monsters. How can you let a person go who has a visa, mortgage and 3 kids (for example) without it eating at you.
Appreciate your reply. Sounds like those are things I handle every day, except that I don’t put people on PIP that often (done twice in my career).
