Their recruiting is a total shitshow. I heard the company is in turmoil.
I had a phone screen at riot. Worst phone screen I ever had. Will not apply again. Guy asked me about how I’d implement a binary tree. I was describing a node struct in C, and the moment I said void *, he cut me off and yelped “AHA! But it is not possible to compare void pointers!!!” A) Yes, you technically *can* compare them, and B ) no friggen duh, I wasn’t done explaining and you cut me off before I could include a type enumeration. Keeps on like this entire screen, constantly cutting me off and trying to “catch errors”. Afterwords I pulled out from interview before even getting the screen feedback. I was pissed.
This sounds weird. Hope you gave this feedback to the recruiter who was working with you.
Keep in mind that the dude could've have been trying to get laid off so he can collect his severance and travel for 8 months in south east Asia
It’s a terrible culture, well documented
There are some good actors at Riot trying to improve things too
When I applied they basically told me to sign up for league and that I needed to play because it makes the process easier. Sorry, didn't realize I needed to get cancer before you hire me for a infrastructure developer.
Riot games
I wouldn’t say that Riot is in turmoil. It was a bit chaotic about half a year ago when the articles came out but since then there has been significant efforts put into into cleaning it up, letting go of a bunch of people. While it still isn’t perfect (what company is?) I wouldn’t classify it as bad. The whole “you must be a core League player to join a Riot” is also changing. We are still looking for gamers but the definition is broader. Being on the inside I really appreciate being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the product they are building and not that you just have fun tech to play with. With that said, we also have fun tech. :)
Different teams are in different places. At a company this size, I was shocked to find that they had really spotty training completed for people interviewing. It’s hit or miss. I had a really solid experience and team, but others are not so fortunate.
Either you want to work at Riot which means Riot's peculiarities are a benefit, or you don't want to work at Riot in which case Riot's perculiarities are a drawback. Riot is a pretty cool place to work if you find the differences at Riot positive. The jank of the recruiting process is basically something that is worth tanking if working at Riot is something you value, otherwise it may not be.
Isn’t working in the gaming industry a shitshow in general?
Yes
Yeah
