What's with the Airbnb hate? (Working there, not the product)

Everytime Airbnb comes up, someone always seems to hint at rampant internal problems. When asked for clarification they just never respond. Are there any actual major issues there, or is it just a handful of noisy disgruntled folks on Blind?

People hate that there is a company so successful at making just a website without solving crazy technological feats

Been a while since I read a nice backhanded compliment.

I mean that's true of many companies. Netflix and Spotify are just YouTube copy cats with pay to use options. Netflix doesn't get any hate though

Because ppl want to prove their decision (not joining Airbnb) is right.

Lol says the sexist, rapist and chauvinist Uber

I agree with op. When you ask about hiring patterns and expectations, Airbnb folks just stop commenting. In fact once a person deleted his own comment when I asked clarification. I suspect there is some hiring bias there which people are even scared to talk about. I really admire what Airbnb has achieved so far and they do have a great pool of talent working there. But just not able to understand this hiring thing.

I think they’re just worried that you might be a reporter in disguise

PayPal rtfhfj May 25, 2018

Haha. Interesting thought. Although my question was very simple. I had asked about the Airbnb trust org. And how the team is overall, complexity of problems they solve and expected behavioral and technical traits for engineering. I thought there is not much controversial there.

There have been numerous departures in the company since the CFO left earlier this year. Polls show that one-third of the people on Blind have left or are planning to leave. Senior ICs seem to be tired of internal issues.

What are the internal issues though? Why are people leaving?

Airbnb Joe Gebbia May 23, 2018

Lack of long-term decision making, politics between product teams, uninteresting engineering challenges, lack of recognition for hard work, self-serving middle management, lack of leadership, etc.

Capital One Drake May 23, 2018

Heard they had new changes implemented by CEO that's stressing everyone out and also resulting in lots of OT

What kind of changes?

Airbnb airbnbx May 26, 2018

Reorg last year was a failure. It was self-serving. Leadership who made the reorg was more interested in preserving their egos and growing their teams. We can't get work done still due to many chains of command. Innovation is zero, often from top down= bad product ideas. Leaders are constantly battling to ship stuff for vanity and promotion. Rumors are that we will go through another one in a few weeks again.

Airbnb Lauuucbwan May 23, 2018

It’s blind bias I feel. Airbnb’s issues aren’t major. Internally, people are pretty satisfied working there.

Airbnb greelo May 24, 2018

Still having access to my previous employers blind channel, this isn’t true. Their people are asking about bonus dates and promo prospects, not how much they hate the place. And in person, a ton of folks are unhappy, everyone just smiles through their teeth.

Airbnb not IPOing anytime soon.

SquareTrade Vjqw70 May 23, 2018

This probably is it

Airbnb BvUe63 May 24, 2018

I guess but you can also be pissed if they're not having an ipo and like working here. My job is great, I like me team, I hate that I can't trade my stock for money.

Airbnb BvUe63 May 24, 2018

For what it's worth I really enjoy working here

Capital One Drake May 24, 2018

What do you do and what's your team?

Airbnb Airdog May 24, 2018

I really love it here. But the problem with Airbnb is the majority of the company ends up working on pretty boring stuff and the product teams are a clusterf^ck. Management also sucks. That said, cool engineering challenges do exist-- they're just not the types of scaling challenges that a lot of SV engineers are interested in.

What about the data science or machine learning teams?
