2 years as PM - company 1
7 months - Gap
8 months - company 2. Engineer
1.5 years - company 3. Made senior engineer and manage small team

BS STEM - State School
MS - Georgia Tech online, in progress

I've had offers in the 175 - 240 range and got an on-site with Amazon once but otherwise have never even gotten a phone screen from FAANGMULA. What do I need to work on in my career to have a shot?

You don't have a single brand name on your resume. I wouldn't even give you a second thought. Try to get a referral.

In case unclear: *everything* is wrong with your resume

Adding that in over 100 Amazon interviews I've seen plenty of gaps and generally don't care at all nor have I ever seen it raised as an issue in the decision making process. It's because your resume looks like a C- at best. The only thing you have going for you is that you're an sde, but I mostly cancel that out because you're getting an online degree.

Where do people find referrals online? By just asking on Blind?

And are people online actually willing to refer total strangers like that? I thought the point of a referral is that you actually know the person

Yes... just finding strangers online. My friend did it through reddit and discord.

  • Mostly that with 2.3 yoe, you are ignoring the fact that you’re getting 175-240k worth of offers which is considered a very good for that many yoe unless you’re an exceptional engineer?

I'd suspect the 7 month gap if you don't have an explanation for it on your resume (family reasons, travel, studying, etc - if you don't have a reason you should make one). And also what Amazon said - brand name companies like brand name companies. If you have 4 years of experience at a place with name recognition even if it's not a top company, that goes a lot further than 4 years of experience at a series of companies no recruiter recognizes.

Looking at the update to Amazon's post maybe not - I don't think it can hurt, though. I work on the business side not the eng side, and we care a lot about unexplained gaps, but basically any explanation that shows you weren't just playing video games for 7 months will do. If eng doesn't care about gaps, probably no reason to sweat it.

Wouldn't bother. Find a referral. Someone may ask in a phone screen, just be prepared with a reasonable answer ("I took some time to get high as fucking possible for a few months").

  • Could be that you are trying to apply to EM or senior IC positions with only 2.3 IC/EM yoe? Could be that you are job hopping frequently? Could be the companies that you work for don't have much prestige?

Use referrals rather than applying online. Also, make sure your LI profile is looking good.
