New grad here looking for guidance. I was used to the approach of gathering information myself from school and the indie scene. So when I found something I have questions for at work, I message the person who wrote the code. My team lead also trust me to gather technical information. Productivity-wise it's working for me so far but I feel my team's producer is not very happy with this approach....I can understand the concern of me doing her job, but I feel this approach is way more efficient than scheduling a formal meeting for a 5min question or have a non-technical person to research a technical problem. If I need someone to do a task for my team's request, I will go through the producer for sure, but for just gathering technical information, should I ask the producers to do so too? What's the standard way to deal with these problems? Thanks in advance!
I had to fire a tester who wouldn't leave the devs alone with questions. All my devs begged me to fire him.
Weird reason for firing the poor QA
Dude if it were me, I’d be happy with you taking something off my plate unless you’re messing up workflow and/or pissing off that other team you’re contacting. Otherwise, sounds like you’ve found an efficiency. Also just ask your producer if you’re doing something wrong. It’ll be appreciated & also point out that you weren’t aware before.

What I do is: - Try to figure it out myself. - Ask my direct coworkers. - Write a message to the person that wrote the code.
Same goes for requesting a task. If it is the team's job to do that kind of task there is no need to ask your producer either. I would go to my producer if I want the other team to give my task more priority for example
Ditto, as you advance in your career this kind of behavior is expected more and more. You should keep the producer appraised of things but it isn't their job to gate keep knowledge transfer.
