I’m going to be interviewing in early 2019. I only want to target teams with good work life balance, ~ 40 hours with the occasional crunch time. When is the best time to ask about it?
Been ghosted twice after asking this directly. I just ask to describe how a regular work day looks like, and usually half of the things you can read from their response, half - from how long it took them to come up with an answer.
That’s a good thing right? Being ghosted after asking about WLB. I don’t want to waste my time interviewing with teams that don’t fit my criteria.
I prefer a straight answer, even if it's a negative one. Result is the same, but perception is different.
Just ask people who work there
Ask for a tour of the office during lunch. Look around at everyone's desk. Does it look like lots of people have been up all night? Is it really busy even though you're at lunch? That will tell know what you need to know.
This is a legitimate question to ask but I wouldn’t ask it directly as if you have some kind of negative motive or give off the vibe that you’re over worked and desperate to get out. Just ask people if they like their job and delivery timelines and how a team shares responsibility, etc. For this reason, don’t even bring up work culture until you get to onsite and get to talk to people face to face.
Never
You should ask your lunch interviewer. At Facebook and Google your lunch interviewer doesn't weigh in on your hiring decision

@JtVM43 Why hide the real question behind another one? Is it considered bad to just ask about WLB directly? How about this one, How often do you work nights and weekend?
Because it could give the impression you don’t want to work hard
