Just curious on people’s thoughts? I’ve got about 1.5M net worth. 10-20 years before retirement. Homelessness. Broken local government. Traffic. Hyper growth (Hi Apple). At some points these are going to line up with a tech recession and the bottom will fall out. I think about moving some place sunny with lower cost of living and lower density. Nice people are less stress. I wonder if others are starting to feel this way and when they plan to flee? I’m thinking 4-6 years? I hope I can hold out.
Sunny, less dense, low cost of living? Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada.
Thanks. I actually already have my bail spot picked out. And a house there too (Colorado). More curious about when to pull the trigger. I want to milk the crazy TC market for as long as I can. Because once I bail I do t think I can get back in.
What is your TC, asking for a friend!
Transfer to the AZ office. I bought a mansion and my mortgage is less than my rent was for a 1 bedroom in Seattle.
Where in Arizona? Is real estate market fast booming there?
Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Housing is pretty cheap compared to Seattle/SV, but going up fast. My house went up 8% last year, 15% total in the past two years. Cost of living is really cheap. Climate sucks during summer though.
This is actually the kind of thing that I did to determine a big move. Wrote out a list of things I hated about my current area, things I liked (there were few) and then pros and cons to moving, how I’d do it, my options for how much I’d be spending. Worked out pretty well seeing all the points laid out like that
The time is now.
Flee to the Eastside, there's still a bare minimum of liberty left.
All big cities have homelessness. You see complaints about Seattle, SF, and NYC all the time here. Only way to avoid it in a big city is moving to a southern big city like Houston where their “solution” is urban sprawl, ie spread everything out by miles so homeless people can’t walk to MY area.
SF and Seattle both enable homelessness and drug use in public, NYC enforces the law and hides homeless people better (mostly hidden from tourists). I won’t argue which philosophy is better but I’ve never came across used needles in NYC parks.
Yes. While NYC has homelessness there is enforcement. You don’t for example see massive encampments in Central Park. It wouldn’t be tolerated. You do see encampments bear green lake. Seattle government is out to lunch on this issue and not supporting the public interest.
I regret not leaving seattle sooner. The weather affected me more than I realized.
How so? Chronically unhappy/depressed?
Same... only place I’ve ever lived where I didn’t make any friends. I think that was 50% depression, 50% pacific northwesterners are not friendly. I was 5000 IU s of Vitamin D and went to therapy twice a week. I moved somewhere more pleasant and I’m totally fine now
I'm in Phoenix, I'll trade with you any time, no question asked.
