When is the earliest I can leave my company after October 1?

I m on OPT. My Visa got picked up. And my decision is pending. When is the earliest I can leave my current organization? Or in other words when is the earliest the new company should file for h1 transfer. Should there be any soak time given after October 1. I heard rumors of having 2 paychecks from current company. Is this correct?
