Whats the best approach to take when a recruiter asks for compensation expectations as a requirement to get to the onsite? Assume the company is great and the people are to.
You should always ask first to have them set the bar. If you're already on the ask then just tell them that they have a band and compensation range for the business and they should be transparent about their compensation. If they don't, it's not worth working there because they're basically hoping to get you cheap if you don't know your worth.
Go on to glassdoor, get a range, and say you expect it to be within that range— ‘market rate’
Don’t use Glassdoor. They don’t list TC very well only salary which is not the same thing as TC.
What would be your suggested reference point, which you could point a recruiter to?
Easier if you are a girl. "You don't want to pay me less than the men. That wouldn't be a good look would it?"
If they insist get a range and use numbers for FB from levels.fyi because this is the top of the comp for most people. I would stall until they have interviewed me.
If you’re in CA it’s illegal for them to ask you about historic salary. So.. look up what people in your role are making on Glassdoor in your area, ask blind peeps, and form your own opinion, then give them a range. Best practice is to get them to disclose their range first.
I say 25% of the median price of a apartments. Usually no recruiter disturbs me after that.

Tell them you expect a market rate. Followed by asking for the comp range for the role.
