When to start applying for target Jan 2019 joining date?

I'll be giving notice at my current job in Sept and take 2-3 months break for personal stuff. For various family reasons I cannot restart fully committed before Jan 2019. If my goal is to restart at a different company in mid-Jan 2019 or later, (e.g. Airbnb, Adobe, Amazon or other swe positions in Seattle), what's a good timeline to start making recruiter contacts or trying to get referrals? Now? Wait couple months? I'm interview prepping already regardless. I don't want to reach out too early and then have the hiring team pass because I can't start for 2-3 months, but I also don't want to wait too late till holiday time when hiring might slow down (also will start showing me having an employment gap of couple months).

You can apply now telling them you can join in Jan

Thanks. So this is true for I imagine Amazon, Facebook, Google. But I'm not sure if this is true for all other companies. What about say, Airbnb and Adobe and other ones that aren't huge behemoths

Those usually be fine. Even at Oscar we have folks start 2-3 months late. I say end of August/early September be too early. This is all to say you are not taking 3 weeks sweet time for every round of interview

Consider not quitting your current job, but just go on a personal leave of absence. Then if you get another offer you can quit your job and go to the new company. However, if you don’t get an offer from one of your target companies you can always go back to your current company. Especially since you have a family this might be a safer bet.
