Let’s assume pay is the same. Dropbox pros: - Good WLB - Higher level / more scope - Fully remote Dropbox cons: - Trying to pivot to stay competitive - Lots of leadership churn / recent layoffs - Stagnant stock - Fully remote - Unlimited PTO Stripe Pros: - Potential for upside / stock probably on good trajectory - Younger company - Stronger talent (?) Stripe Cons: - IPO could be years down the road (and therefore half my pay could be deferred for years) - Seems like they are cleaning up a bunch of bad code Is there anything I’m missing?
Stripe seems like a much more promising company and has loads of engineering talent. Not really sure what edge Dropbox has going for it these days in comparison. For what it's worth maybe 5 years ago Dropbox had the same type of allure as Stripe does now.
That’s my impression as well. I have a friend that went from FB to Stripe and said it was super boring and left. That gave me pause. Also, I’m not sure how long I want to wait around for some theoretical IPO.
Stripe stock doesn't have an upside anymore So keep that in mind. That's a deal breaker for me. If I'm joining a pre IPO company I definitely would like the stock upside.
Missing having to stand Stripe CEO who thinks of himself as a precocious genius when all he has done is a payment platform
😂
lol I think you might be projecting some of your insecurities here - Patrick is very humble
Stripe RSU policy is the biggest downside, be aware!
I mean, you still get 1 year of upside. That’s better than no upside, which is more or less what Dropbox would be.
1 year of upside is assuming that they don’t IPO before next April? Based on my understanding, you get your first share next year and the price is based on next year as well
Stripe probably
Why
They are a growing business, we are a slowing business. I'm guessing you'll get alot of stock, so that matters
I would go with Stripe. Trying to not be biased and TC aside. I think Stripe will give you a better career launchpad and brand recognition when you want to move jobs in the future. To me that is really valuable after you consider the basics like commute, comp, etc.
What's your insider opinion on standing the CEO
I feel like that’s more important when you’re early in career. Later it doesn’t really seem to matter that much. Maybe I’m misguided?
Dropbox core infra (block systems, etc) has better engineering talent than Stripe. Besides that group I feel that the eng talent is about that same. There's more upside at Stripe if you're willing to put in the elbow grease, and more culturally aligned with FB's execution model (and its corresponding strengths and drawbacks). The company's on a tear and massively expanding vs Dropbox's contraction. They just laid off 11% of the company a month ago: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-dropbox-layoffs/dropbox-to-layoff-11-of-its-workforce-coo-to-step-down-idINKBN29I1X0 Stripe is a B2B product at the end of the day, and that may bother folks who have to explain what Stripe does to the normal person or doesn't geek out over financial stuff.
Thanks, that’s helpful. If I refuse to work more than 40 hours a week, would that go over well at stripe?
Yes, for L3s and below. L4s and above would probably spike 40+ hours / week depending on the crunch, at least a few times a year. Blind Pulse scores puts Stripe and FB in the same WLB bucket. If you're on the product side, there are non-negotiable regulatory deadlines with various countries to meet and random world events (e.g. COVID) to respond to due to increased risk*. *Stripe is the underwriter in many / most cases. This gives the company more leverage and opportunity, but means it has to react and manage risk.
Between these two I would just pick the one with highest TC
I wouldn't choose either. It looks like you've missed the boat with respect to upside at Stripe, and I've read some disturbing stuff here on Blind about their culture. I don't understand how Dropbox is still in business. There seem to be better alternatives to all their offerings, in many cases available for free. I think you should stay at Facebook and continue to interview until something you're really excited about comes up.
What kind of disturbing cultural stuff?
Hire-and-fire, poor WLB, bad managers, that kind of thing. You can look at the reviews here, and search for old threads.
I feel everything is perfect at Dropbox, except that there's no growth...
As a result of which (and their elimination of perks like tuck shop) I've heard Dropbox is bleeding talent.
