At a small startup, east coast, 4 YOE, looking to maintain a SWE career for the next 5-10 years. Maybe less time depending on how things go.

I actually know what I’m doing and have full stack experience, so I can get things done, but since going remote in 2020 i’d prefer to chill the fuck out more.

What companies should I be looking for in order to coast for ~5 years? Managers not watching me like a hawk, low stress deadlines, WLB, no PIPing etc. Ideally full remote without getting stuck on call. Have solid knowledge with Angular2+, database/api design, docker, and AWS.

I have a referral at CapitalOne for $150k TC but I’ll have to grind leetcode for it. Worried about stack ranking there.

Moderate COL area.
Horrible TC rn at $65k with 1% equity mostly vested, am looking for at least $150k TC.

  • You have 4 YOE and want to coast when the market is at its hottest? Not going to tell you what to do but that doesn’t seem like the wisest move, but then again if you were wise you wouldn’t be asking this question

    • Completely fair, and I fully respect your choice, apologies for sounding confrontational in my initial message. What I was trying to highlight is that we’re in a very lucky place (SWE, US) at a very lucky point in time (demand for tech has never been higher, young) so it makes a lot of sense to take advantage of the circumstances to set yourself up to have an amazing future — it isn’t the same as having fun in the present but personally I would lean towards making sure I’m in a comfortable position before relaxing and slowing things down in terms of career and financial growth

Yeah, I’m not really opposed to career growth and seeking it out, but the easiest way to find low stress jobs seems to coincide with them being coasting-friendly. I plan on ramping up TC, plus I went to college for free and have $150k saved. I definitely do not function well in high stress jobs and I also want to avoid having to work more than 40h weeks without solid PTO. Coasting situations often lead me to focusing on what I care about and actually doing well and advancing my career more. I want to get my feet wet in enterprise situations too, which has a lot of uncertainty for me right now and I don’t want to get in over my head. I have no problem working a low stress job and then dumping the job at 12-24months to go somewhere else

Mostly depends on the team. I know several people in FAANG who work less than 20 hours a week.

You can definitely coast at apple. Even amazon you can “coast” in terms of getting your work done and correctly estimating projects while only working 39 hour weeks. Coast at apple however is just not even putting in the effort (except during crunch times).

Salesforce, Microsoft, Google, most small startups.
Tbh most of tech in the west coast is chill and mostly coasting after you have 5 yoe or so.
Find a senior full remote role, be clear you don't want many meetings. If you can find one without daily standup it's a big win
