I've been at Google for 10 years and am starting to feel like I'm stagnating. I'm also tired of having too much process to get anything done, difficult promo process (currently still L4), and projects getting always canceled. I want to try something different, maybe a smaller company (Google has been almost my entire career), and an uplevel to a senior position. I want to work somewhere where I am responsible for a bigger part of the system and can move faster, but am concerned that I'll have to take a big drop in TC and for worse WLB. Are my expectations for my next role reasonable? Where are good places for me to look into for my next role? TC 340K (after this past years stock increase)
Infosys as vp
Been thinking about it for a while ! Instead of Infosys /cognizant /Accenture whose revenue model is solely based on people (client rate - salary of employee) how about other industries such as banks , insurance , retail or any where they have model to generate revenue and VP of Engineering /Director of Engineering or Head of Engineering where it can be a coast for life job
You won't take a big drop in TC. 340K at 10 YOE is on the lower to mid level if it's in bayarea
The sad truth is that working at google makes it harder for you to adapt outside of google. You’ll still probably find a role and get the comp, but will have a hard adjusting to both the technologies and scope. If you look at the internal statistics at google, you’ll find how many people boomerang back.
Stagnating- Try Amazon . Forget WLB for a while .. and then come back to WLB after you feel you did good amount of learn . Hold on , did you try GCP ?
Join a late start startup that’s guaranteed growth. And then go back to google to rest and vest if you aren’t retired after the ipo. You could also just take advantage of having a stable job with decent pay and good wlb and find hobbies outside of work to satisfy you. A job as a corporate slave will always get boring eventually
How are you still at L4? Understand that projects might have got canceled and some difficult but 10 years is a really long time!! Do you think you are doing something wrong? Some lights on the same is appreciated.
Started off as an SET L3 before transitioning to SWE (still L3), then truthfully I slacked off a bit before finally working to get L4 a couple of years ago. Still here, havent slacked off since then but L5 still not in sight.
Get a reality check. Attend few interviews

HRT. Next level of prestige.
Do funds like hrt, even hire generalists with a decade of experience in a non adjacent role? Was under the impression that the further away you are from school the more difficult it becomes unless you stayed in academia/research/an adjacent role at another quant fund. I'd also imagine a career with 10+ years and very little progression also plays against OP.
Only do HRT if ur really dedicated though. Gender transition is not an easy decision to make.
