I have been in the US(leaglly) for about 10 years and there is no hope of getting permanent residency. I am wondering what is the best course of action I should take to secure my future. I already have a home that I own(40%) and have some decent investments in stock market. Since being on H1B is always a risk and wait time for GC is 100 year s or more. Which country I should invest; US or India? To avoid double taxation, I refrained myself to invest in the India, but i am thinking otherwise now. Is it wise to put all your eggs in one country? How people in same boat as mine is managing their finances?
Doesn’t matter, most important thing is to save and invest. You can always buy funds like MINDX if you are worried Indian economy is likely to outpace US (Even try FLATX or Matthews China funds ..... if it aligns with your investment philosophy). If you have US born kids, and you had to relocate to India ..... 401k/IRA can be thought of as inheritance money. If you want to buy real estate in India (just make sure you have family members in India to help you manage it before you rerun). I don’t really get putting all your eggs in one country argument..... unless all your money is in real estate or bank. If so, you need to diversify anyway
There's tons of investment vehicles to invest in India via US ETFs or Indian stocks listing in US markets. There are legal limitations on what you can invest in outside the US besides real estate. And there's a lot of diversification you can do while investing here in the US: Stocks, ETFs, Futures, Options and Forex. So I wouldn't worry so much about directly investing in India. You've also got to understand that we live in a global economy now. No single country is isolated in terms of out performance!
I heard interest rates are high in India
You are right. Fixed deposits can get upto 8%, the inflation is higher, though. If I were to invest I would in US stock market. RE in India has been depressed for the last five years. Only buy when you are ready to live there. Managing tenants is a headache specially in India.
Invest on name of your parents in India
Wherever you invest think of ways to repatriate funds to the country you going to settle. I hear Indian economy is sluggish lately
