I'm kinda drunk/high right now.... 41 years old. Talking to the wife about where we thought we'd be vs where we are in our lives and careers specifically. Where do you nerds see yourselves in 20 years? To start off, I got hit by the 2000 .com bubble and couldn't find a job to save my life. 3 years as a SWE intern, building products people used every day and ZERO interviews post grad. I ended up working for $12/hr as basically 2000's version of geek squad for a small company working with SMB businesses. I honestly thought I'd end up as the "IT guy" at some local school system. Built a career working at bigger and bigger companies in infrastructure (still miss doing SWE for consumer type products, NOT internal IT sh!t, would have burned out). Spent a TON of time traveling around the world as I was the "young single guy" on various enterprise teams. My last enterprise job I was spending about 3 months a year in APAC or EU on various projects. Moved over to pre-sales with my current job and just accepted a job with Google which was so.. .SOOOO far out of what I thought was possible in my 20's.. I have no point to this post other than... There's more to life and job experience outside of FANG or whatever you whippersnappers call it these days.. And you never know where you'll land. Work your ass off, be passionate about what you do vs a drone.. Appreciate every relationship you build... And who knows where you'll end up. In closing.. Get the Fook of my lawn. #goodnight #goodmorninghangover yoe 20 tc 300k+ location: uber low cost still on my lawn?!?
Not writing code. Pretty sure I have at most 10 years left of this bullshit before I need to do something else.
I read your dissertation and did not find your TC...
Fixed you twat
Thx. I'll get off your lawn now.
I started out making $12 hour 14 hears ago at a fortune 50 company as an analyst in lcol. Worked my way up to better and better roles (non-tech). Just joined amazon making $220k 14 years later. I never thought This kind of money was possible. Anyway in 20 years I hope to be retired
whippersnappers? aren’t you a bit young to be taking like that
In 20 years, I'll be closer to your age than I am now. So, will still be working. I'm not in tech but the WLB is awesome. In at 9AM on average, out the door by 5PM on the dot, and my commute is in the single digits, miles wise. Low stress. The only downside is TC. YOE: 3. TC: 100k
Hopefully have built the biggest robotics company to free everyone from repetitive labor.. mental and physical
Lol there will always be some form of repetitive labor. Sometimes engineers over-engineer tasks and create negative ROIs. Automation doesn’t also make sense
I love this post! Good for you. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you’ve experienced some great things in life. OK X’er! Also, it’s refreshing to read a post without horrible grammar.
i wish that i was capable of starting my own business
You are. It’s scary. My buddy left a really lucrative spot in salesforce to start a company and is now in negotiation to be acquired. Scary yes. Impossible no.
