I am a Statistical Programmer (Clinical SAS Programmer, uses SAS/ R to analyze clinical trial/ healthcare data) with more than 5 years of experience and is interested to pursue a career in the Data Science (DS) field. With this interest I have pursued a course in DS, but now little confused to choose a specific area in Data Science filed as it is diverse. Can anyone suggest, 1. which area in DS field pays more and have a standard career growth 2. and their Job titles 3. and the company name. My priority is also to have better WLB, I will dig this into more once I get to know the above details. This information would also help me to understand the work they do and the areas to prepare for the interviews though the LinkedIn Job Description section. If you have any other ideas/suggestions to ease my search, please do let me know. Thank you.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Roles : Quant >= Research Scientist >= Machine Learning Engineer >= Applied Scientist = Core Data Scientist = Full Stack Data Scientist = Data Scientist (ML) >= Research Data Scientist > Product Data Scientist = Data Scientist, Product Analytics > Product Analyst >= Data Analyst Areas: Deep Learning (DL)>= Operations Research >= Non-ML Statistical Modeling >= Non-DL Machine Learning >= Experimentation / Causal Inference > Product Analytics >= Data Analyst Industry/Company: Hedge Fund > Tech > General Finance > Everything Else Title for Individual Contributors (ICs): Distinguished >= Principal> Staff > Senior IC to Manager Mapping: Staff = Manager (aka M1, front line) Principal = Senior Manager or Director, depending on company Distinguished = Director or VP depending on company The biggest areas of variation will be the company, prestige, and industry however. For example , at Stitch Fix, Staff Product Data Scientists make $409k which is more than some directors will make a tier 2 non-tech companies or banks. Data can be found at https://www.levels.fyi/comp.html?track=Data%20Scientist
Wow awesome write up. Thank you! Do companies like Stitch fix hire a DS that has banking/finance background?
There’s no background preference but the full stack DS interviews will have a significant programming and ML systems design component (2 actually for systems design). IDK about the product DS interview, I passed the ML/ full stack one
