If you are planning to use your car for a very long time then may be buy new. But even then if you can get a one year old car with extended warranty and can save money why not? One yr old is not too bad compared to a brand new one
For a long commute, get a car which can provide comfortable ride -- good shock absorption, stable smooth drive. Generally luxury cars are better at it. It is good that you are looking at A4 (A3 is sub par). Some people suggests buying used car -- but most people don't sell luxury car before 4-5 years. A car from 2012 lacks a lot of desired features.
Top of the line/fully loaded Camry XSE and Accord are good options. I liked driving Lexus too.
Everyone who got a Tesla Model 3 seems to be very happy -- so if I can get a model 3 right now, I'd. But I voted for A4 as it is readily available and well trusted.
Note that, my suggestions are based on 2018 models and from the study I did while I was buying my car. My budget wasn't high so I went for 2018 Chevy Malibu (loaded sports model).
Get a good car -- you'd thank yourself later.
I like Sedan or Coup.
It's my moms old car that she gave me when I turned 18. Plan on driving it till it doesn't run anymore. No car payment, super cheap insurance. Bank the rest of the cash and save a lot of money. Dont be an idiot and blow a bunch of money on a nice car. Cars a just a tool to get you from point a to point b. As long as it gets you there safely it doesn't matter
