I got 3 offers from three companies for business analyst/data sciency roles. Which sounds the best for my career if I want to make it to FANG as a data scientist in a year or two? This is my first job out of college and my degree is not data science related so I want to make sure I am making the right choice for future TC. Thanks in advance for any thoughts. A. Business analyst - 140k at large company (think wework equivalent) doing mostly sql (Unix stack) B. Data scientist - 110k salary 20k “cash value equity” for a 10 person biotech startup using data science for a trendy field (Microsoft stack) C. Data scientist - 130k salary at a nonprofit using data science for health insurance (Unix stack)
Did you not convert Jet.com to a FTE?
I didn’t want to work there. They pay data scientists quite low. https://www.paysa.com/salaries/jet--data-scientist
Why not try for Labs? I have an outstanding new grad data scientist offer 230k TC year 1, ~180k from second year given no increments. And this is when I fucked up a bit in negotiations. Could have negotiated a bit higher.
Take B or C, looks most promising from Work standpoint . At this point in your career, TC should not matter unless you have extraneous circumstances which require you to focus on that. Go for learning in the first five years .... stay humble stay learning
B is the most attractive, but salary too low, and it's too small, so there's risk of losing the job. C is the most sane option.
Agreed

D: brush up your leetcode and coding skills and apply to FANG as a regular SWE, pay is better, they do hire new grads, and you can still do data sciency work depending on which team you land in. Whereas as a data scientist in your title you'll be basically an sql monkey even at FANG
Not as a quant. There is clear separation between ba and quant across all fang.
This is a pretty interesting answer and I think I can do this in a bit (perhaps I can study this year) but I need to choose one of these jobs now.
If you are doing DS, make sure the company has infra ready and clean data for you to play with. Otherwise you will end up as a data engineer to get all the data ready in the first couple years.
Which isn't a bad work experience for a fresh college grad. OP can't possibly be building sophisticated ML models now.
Which company has clean data at their disposal for data scientists??
Important point ^^ if they don’t have infra and good data models work is basically going to be trying to influence teams to get proper data
