Which laptop to choose Amazon? Mac or Windows(sde1)

Feb 27 14 Comments

Hello,

I recently received an amazon offer, in the onboarding process I can choose from a Mac and Windows laptop.
I typically use a windows laptop.
There a choice to get the 16 inch new Mac pro which is expensive and I want to experience Apple products so I am tempted to go against my regular OS.

Do you have to give the laptop back before leaving the company?

Which laptop would you choose if you are a windows user?

  • You have to give the laptop back when leaving.

OS choice largely depends on the tech stack you're working with, Mac however makes things a bit easier with setup and coding - it's a proper unix-like environment.

Mac OS is really rough around the edges and if you rely on Excel you're going to be pulling your hair out. But as one of the other commenters said, if you're a developer, you really don't want to be on Windows.

I've had two top of the line MacBook Pros. They were fine, but there are just so many quality of life improvements in Windows that don't exist in Mac that the day-to-day use was just annoying. Window snapping has been standard in Ubuntu since the early 2000s, standard in Windows since Windows 7, But on Mac OS folks are still dragging around windows in space like it's 1993. Microsoft Excel is not optimized, so a 20mb Excel file with 50,000 rows of data would grind my i7 MacBook Pro to a halt. It was so bad that I actually started using my cell phone at work because my computer would be totally locked up between operations for minutes at a time. Maybe one of these days Mac OS will get to where Windows is in terms of quality of life and optimization, but it's not there yet. The only reason to use it is if you're a developer.
