What do you think is wrong with a kid who got rejected by 9 colleges?
As a dev, what would you consider? How important is the manager factor in Amazon? More pointers: level 2 SDE in Samsung vs SDE/Sdet in Amazon. Pay package is about the same. Currently have about 2.5yrs of experience.
amzn.. obviously
Make sure you're comparing the offers correctly. I don't know about Samsung, but what Amazon calls a "signing bonus" is a fiction. It's all just total comp, and year 1 or 2 they shift some of that from stock to cash. If your actual comp is over target (due to rising stock), future RSU grants are reduced or eliminated to return you to target. 4yr vesting cliff, 40% vesting in the last year (so if you leave before 4 years, you leave a lot behind). Manager at Amazon is everything; they have near total control of your job happiness and destiny. Lots of individual autonomy at Amazon; some teams are great and you could last a few years. Some teams are horrible and you won't last a year. 88% of devs are SDE 2 or 1 and a similar fraction of the company has been there 4 yrs or less.
The recruiter at Amazon said that my overall package is fixed at 150k and I can choose my base + sign on + RSu s as long as the total equals $150. So I requested for a slightly higher base of $130k and a lesser sign on and RSUs. I would probably be getting only 50 RSU s vested over a period of 4 years. The package at Samsung has a lower base of $125k (which I am currently earning here at Yahoo) but their sign on and relocation package is good: 15 + 20. So overall it looks to be the same for both companies. My one concern is regarding commute. location of Samsung is near where I intend to stay and there will be very minimal commute. But I might need to commute a min of 30 mins for Amazon one way. How is the traffic at 520? My second concern is Manager. When I interviewed at Samsung, I felt that the hiring manager was pissed off at me for some reason. I did not get good vibes from him. I absolutely loved the Manager of SDET team in Amazon and the manager of SDE team seemed to be so so. Third concern is job level. In Samsung I am offered level 2 whereas in Amazon I would be level 1. The job description at Amazon is more challenging and Sounds exiting. I have been a developer and am not sure moving to SDeT for the sake of manager and job description is a wise move. I was told the Sdet position also involves development of tools and infrastructure. But I am not sure if that will come across as dev experience in my resume when I look for my next move. Last of all I have heard that work culture at Amazon is not good and u don't get treated well. And that there is very little to almost no growth but the learning curve is pretty high. At Samsung, the growth is pretty fast but the learning curve is not that great.
Don't go for sdet option. Your coding skills will become rusty over time. Work is very important factor to make decision. Interview with other companies.
Decline the Amazon offer, join a Dev role and then come back to Amazon as SDE 2, if you reject the offer they will come back to you again in a year...
agree. sdet is a joke at amazon
Why is Sdet a joke? I was told that I will still get to do development mainly. It is just that i will be writing tools for automation and not really perform any kind of tests as such. Is that not true?
if you really like that manager and want that job, express your concern about career growth and ask for more
Ask for more as in Sdet 2 or convert it to SDE or in terms of compensation?
I'm not sure he can convert it to side since you did your interview under the sdet requisition. if he's an SDM managing test and dev engineers you can still give it a try. sdet2, dev, or sdet with better package would be all good. you might not get any of them but what do I lose if u ask
You will be stuck as SDET here like forever...
I initially interviewed for Sdet at 2 teams here in Amazon but one of the team decided to convert it to SDE role...I for sure know that the Sdet manager has only sdets under him
Go dread pirate Bezos. Easy decision.
Go to Amazon and keep interviewing with Google FB and MSFT. You would be sde 2 at msft.
Go with Amazon! Much better I'm your resume IMO.
