Gig workers have been demanding respectable wages and Uber/ Lyft/ Doordash have been fighting against it. It is very surprising that mostly left leaning tech industry and engineers have kept their mouth shut on this. Historically, same type of people have called out Walmart and others for exploting workers and now the ball is in their court, they are setting up funds to legally fight gig workers .. These are same people who oppose plastic straws, push for electric cars... typical NIMBY mindset
Everyone demands more money
Yeah and some ppl don't pay basics like minimum wage
Well that’s an easy way for these companies to shut down!
Most of them are clearly employees, and should be treated (paid, vetted) as such
How about you stop deciding what's best for others.. and give them an option and see how it works out
If healthcare wasn’t tied to jobs this wouldn’t even be a conversation. I would love California to push on that, like Newsom said he would.
+1
Gig workers aren't forced to work for Uber or lyft. I don't understand the argument Tbh. They present an opportunity for people to make some extra cash, and now everyone is like no, you have to make them employees. I don't understand.
Oh really.. since the abolition of slavery no one is really forced to take any job.. so we should abandon all regulations related to employment like minimum wage, paid time off etc.. you are so out of whack
Gig workers should get some benefits and minimum wage. The government is going about it the wrong way, however, but the end goal is reasonable.
This is a classic case of subsidizing failed entrepreneurs and discouraging founders and other business owners from innovating and creating opportunities for said failing entrepreneurs. The question that needs to be asked is what were these partners doing before driving with Uber/Lyft and if the experience as a driver partner was so awful, why didn't they pivot?
Is that you tk? What an asshole blaming these poor souls who work for peanuts driving their cars to make these Uber aholes rich
"This is rich, coming from someone whose company won't donate a parking lot to Mountain View to help the homeless -- the very homeless that Google helped create." See what I did there?
Employment is a double-edged sword. On one hand, they would receive set pay and benefits. On the other, they would have specific hours they have to work, losing the flexibility that drives many of them to drive in the first place.
Def on the gig workers side. Won't mind paying more for these services.
How much do you typically tip your Uber driver? Talk is cheap.
