I worked at Facebook for two years and only learned bad habits. The engineering quality was total garbage.

On engineering quality at Facebook: at Facebook, any engineer could accept any code change. A lot of code was either completely unmaintained, or the people maintaining it couldn’t be assed to review changes, so we’d just get other people on our team to accept problematic code. It was not unheard of to do reviews while drunk.

This is a very hard question because it greatly depends on your team, manager, and product.

For example, in Oracle Bare Metal you can learn a lot since it’s written from scratch, but in WebLogic probably not so much.

Basically, the more mature the product line is, the flatter the learning curve. Think of Airbnb/Uber 3 years ago, before huge scaling, and now.

Team- having more experienced folks who are willing to share their wisdom in a friendly manner.

Manager, oh managers, is probably the most critical factor. Your manager should be one who lets you steer technically and venture out and try new things. I’ve been fortunate enough that I was always pulled to uncharted lands which I greatly enjoy.

    None of the above.

Go for a company that has recently raised a B round aka has demonstrated product/market fit and is ready to scale.

Advice No 1: You can only learn technology from people, not from the company.
