People who have recently interviewed. Did you answer technical questions using a whiteboard, or did you use a code editor?

I'm trying to figure out if I should study on a whiteboard, or if directly on leetcode is fine.

  • I did several loops recently and they used both, but mostly whiteboard. I suggest practicing both since each has its challenges. Whiteboard teaches you to write straight and orderly lines and plan how to use your space to avoid a mess (e.g. Use appropriately small writing and start high enough). Leetcode forces you to write correct code and usually it forces you to have good or reasonable complexity. The combination worked nicely for me.

I actually enjoy white board coding. I would 100% rather whiteboard code in an interview than have to write actual working code on a computer.

Whiteboard, out loud, as if it were an interview. Near the end, sprinkle in some"directly on leetcode and firecode" time as well. Once you're too used to whiteboard, you might get writer's block looking at an empty textbox. It's a weird feeling. But definitely build up the skill on a whiteboard.

I like to write test cases off to the side, and check them off as I reach them with my code. It's an easy way to be methodical and not miss cases.

  • I would do both, go and buy a whiteboard and practice. It sucks but is currently the nature of the beast.
