Who broke our industry hiring?

Sep 13, 2021 30 Comments

So, I am an experienced engineer, with references (usually internal), top companies (FAANG) experience, major contributions to high-profile OSS projects.

Why do I have to do multiple calls with a recruiter, phone screen (or two) plus a whole day of Zoom? I don’t think any other industry requires so much time and effort.

Some companies would drop the phone screen. That’s it.

When did this madness start? Was it Google who did it first and other companies blindly followed?

(I understand that smaller companies outside the Bay Area might be more flexible, I’m talking about mid+ size tech companies)

tech careers are lucrative. a rigorous interviewing process is required to limit false-positive hires.

  • Idk who started this but all I know is that these companies made the owners of interview prep sites like algoexpert millionaires. Kinda crazy to think about lol a whole new million dollar industry was created just for the purpose of tech interviews

  • How would you have improve the process? You are the VP of Engineering with 100 engineers and there is a constant churn of 5 per quarter - how would you set up the interview process to be more efficient and find the right engineers you need? Let’s also say you receive 50 resumes / referrals per position.

    • Drop tech screens/rounds if there are references and publicly available work.

That's easy to fix. First off why do you lose 5 per quarter? You must be underpaying your people. Fire 50, pay the remaining 50 double.

Now, don't ever talk to losers who didn't go to top schools but want to join you. There is a reason they didn't go there. Only vet smart people.

  • At a prior startup, the ONE time we made an exception to our technical hiring bar (based on other less tangible factors), we let in a senior engineer (from FB no less) who was the least competent senior in the organization. He was the only bad hire we had that I can remember.

“I don’t think any other industry requires so much time and effort” - plenty of other industries do this plus more.

Could we do better? Sure. What do you propose? Move you to the on-site without a phone screen?
