Mostly because of their pay and benefits and a chance to make that $$$ during IPO. The tech is definitely meh. I bet booking.com gets more traffic than Airbnb
Why apple considered a top company , isn’t a company that has credit cards like discover , capital one etc.
Why Apple considered a top company, isn't it a phone company like Samsung, LG etc.
Define top. Apple, samsung, LG all make a lot of products, not just handsets, and shit ton of money.
Yeah I have said that for a long time. They are a low traffic basic reservation webapp. Really don't get what are the tech challenges there. Another overhyped company. People love it because it's part of the business startups that everyone overhype lately. Such is Uber and a couple others. Silicon valley was better when it was about real tech and not webapps.
What’s webapps? Is google one?
Google is partially one, but the main part of their tech is some complex model in the backend. Search or maps for example are resolving real problems in the backend. Airbnb is literally like any other websites that existed 10 years ago. In all seriousness can you tell me what's different between Airbnb website and American Airlines website? I bet AA gets more traffic and reservation, but you would never say that AA is a cool SV tech company, isn't ?
Expedia and Priceline just aggregate data for others?
Airbnb has a strong focus on overall travel experience, from giving people an opportunity to stay in places hotels often aren’t, to connecting them with a range of experiences. Airbnb thinks big, most other sites just aggregate data and provide a way to book tickets. I do find Airbnb’s vision a little silly at times but I prefer it to none at all.
What do you mean they think big? You are just regurgitating PR nonsense there. I don't see that on their website, which is only a travel booking webapp.
Their thinking is rooted in more than just getting you a cheap room, which means that they have a framework in place that guides how they make new product and service decisions. MOST people just use it to get a cheap room, sure. Many hosts just want to make money off their property. But if Airbnb limited themselves to catering to that, they’d blunt their growth. If you truly see it as PR nonsense, I’d urge you to think a little more deeply and longterm about the business cases.
It's all about culture, salary and perks.
Their culture is complete BS though. It's a company disguising a boring traditional business into "kumbaya we're a community" nonsense that appeals to 20-something SF hipster engineers. If all you can sell people on are perks... Then you probably don't have any interesting problem to solve. Their lawyers have harder problems to solve than their engineers.
This. Their culture is all pure koolaid and cult thinking. They have two (two!!) One hour behavioral culture interview as part of their process to make sure you are part of the cult. At the end of the day , they are a simple boring webapp that is wayyyyy too overhyped
Their tech is not great. Their engineering blog boring for backend ... but it’s just cool to go there because it’s pre-ipo and all.
I think it’s because of following same mediation model as uber/lyft. Ride hailing companies are a hit and so any company that followed same business model got the hype. Plus the hot stock market
