For those of you who have entered into Amazon, what did you tell the recruiters and interview panels when asked this question? “Why do you want to work for Amazon?”
Leadership Principles. Chance to invent at scale. Company culture isn’t for everyone, but it’s a fit for me.
Because I already worked there (as an “independent contractor”)
I’m really looking for what did you tell them in your interview versus what you tell people around you.
I told them they reached out to me, I have a job that I’m happy with. Their reputation is why I’m here so we’re looking to see if there’s mutual interest
If any of the LPs stand out to you, say: I value {LP}, for example {example of when you used the LP or when using it would have been valuable} and because amazon values {LP} and that you’ve heard from friends that {LP is followed at Amazon}, you think that Amazon would be a good fit.
Because I like to torture myself.
Glad they still gave you the job.
Because while many companies have good intentions, being the most customer centric company does not go unnoticed. Inventing mechanisms to simplify the customer experience is what keeps me awake at night and in the bathroom.
team is chill af Benefits are good (20+ holidays) Unlimited bananas, nuts, cup noodles and oatmeal And I get paid close to half a million a year
We don't get bananas, nuts, noodles, or oatmeal at my office. I'm glad your team is good. My team is a bit of an odd fit and I regularly feel tension. I never met with my current manager face to face during the interview process; shortly after I started I asked how they screen for team fit. He said they don't really care about fit. Not that my team is terrible, but it shows.
L7?
I just got an offer to move to Amazon and I will be starting in March. I said that I wanted to work for a company that puts the customer first. Customer Obsession is one of their leadership principles and I have worked for 3 other companies that basically ripped all of the principles from Amazon. What Amazon is doing works, yes they might have a toxic culture, but if you can put your head down and put in the time, you will find success.
Uhhh, that’s what you think. I think a lot of companies have similar things to the LPs. I do think Amazon takes it too seriously though. However it does make interviewing for other companies way easier as they eat up the LPs.
Why move from Uber to Amazon? TC, location, bad team?
I talked about how I liked the idea of getting to work on things at an Amazon scale, really large problems with large, complicated solutions. I also talked about how I was interested in working with the best and brightest people in the field. I tried to sprinkle in some specific teams or initiatives I was genuinely interested in as well.
