Why Do People Care if Musk Buys Twitter?

See a lot of rage on Twitter and Reddit Why do people care so much of musk buys Twitter? Also I see a lot of people saying free speech is for the government only and that Twitter is a private platform that doesn't have to abide by those rules - I agree with both of those statements, but if Twitter wants to make their own rules saying they want to do "xyz about free speech" isn't that them acting as a private company making their own policy and has nothing to do with the government? Am I missing something here? Idk I'm not a Twitter user beyond making an account to read the responses recently so forgive me if I'm missing a critical detail 😂

I don't understand either (unless you work at Twitter and that will affect you more)

Because a certain political party realizes it’s now losing power

They want to stifle free speech. Twitter allows child predators but if you don't align politically, you're off. I'm not into politics but this is wrong and a slippery slope that folks cheered on because it was in line with their political views. You can't affect elections but denying a platform for all speech and then pretend to protect speech with your platform. I don't care who buys them... I won't join.

"I'm not into politics, but pronouns groomer BLM come and take it attack helicopter"

Not even sure what that means so... have at it

I don’t particularly give a shit if I use my seventh social platform or the eighth, but I’m not Fucking with trump. There is a long list of politicians I despise on both sides, but this asshole is trying to dismantle the peaceful democratic transition of power in a country that I love, and I will not stand for it. I think Ted Cruz is an asshole but at least he actually believes in something.

Some people are afraid that Trump will get his twitter account back. And that conservatives will finally have a large social media platform.

No political party needs a platform. Both sides need to be able to speak freely. That’s the entire problem — Twitter thought they could only allow one political voice.

Chime nmUS51 Apr 25, 2022

What’s gonna be funny is how Twitter will just turn even more into mini Facebook… full of old people and grandpa conspiracies. this is what the “free speech” he’s so hoping for will get him. Normal people don’t have the time & will just tune it out.

Amazon KUYW05 OP Apr 25, 2022

Isn't that just inevitable with all social media platforms though?

Homesite Group djay_sde Apr 25, 2022

Eventually yes. And that’s why Twitter’s sale is being frowned upon because now it’s going to go the same way as CrapBook or whatever it’s called now a days.

They are afraid Elon will establish an open and fair marketplace for ideas. Because they know their ideas suck.

Amazon djdh72 Apr 25, 2022

This is the correct answer ^

Open and fair??? Lmfao. The amount of naivety in this post gave me a much needed chuckle for today. Thanks for the comedic relief.

Serious response, it's just a political tribalism thing. Rightwingers mistakenly assume the company has a "liberal" bias when like any other company, it has a "what makes the most profit and mitigates our liability" bias, and are likely hoping anti-vax content and hate speech will be allowed + unbanning of controversial conservative figures... I think they also just think it makes Liberals mad and they don't really have their own opinions but really like that. Liberals are probably worried about conservative figures being unbanned, allowances of hate speech and anti-vaxx content, and they think it'll somehow doom "democracy" and are overreacting. Me? Idc. Most social media is too big. I hope he mishandled it and tanks the company. Decentralization is good so nobody has too much power.
