Its impossible to have a good life in Dublin anymore. Big tech and brexit has made it harder to survive in Dublin than San Fran etc .. and it rains all the time. https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/abroad/dublin-ranked-the-worst-city-in-the-world-to-move-to-for-housing-1.4102979
Interestingly my division is opening a dev center there in their infinite wisdom.
I assume those openings are part of why it is considered good for career opportunities: “However, the good news is international expats considered Dublin to be good for career opportunities. Dublin is ranked as the third best city in the world for job and career, behind Ho Chi Minh City (first) and Prague.”
Microsoft has been in Dublin for over 20 years...
Let’s all go to bogota
Almost whole Europe is like that. Also pay is shit. And the worst thing, it is so much easier to find a job in big tech in USA (as an EU citizen). Applied for a job in Berlin in Microsoft, competed with 500 people for one position (which is paid way less than one in Seattle).
You get good benefits and social support net in exchange.
Well I just moved there knowing all that. It's definitely as expensive if not more in some ways than SF, but coming from sf fog belt I don't experience the rain as being worse (pretty much same lack of sun I had in sf). What I do feel about being in Dublin is a lot of "oh, this is what things actually cost" because unlike the US they aren't arbitrarily throwing subsidies around and running up crazy deficits. They do a much better job taking care of *all* their citizens than US does, they don't run a bunch of border prisons for immigrants, and they don't spend gross amounts of money on oil wars. It's a society I'd rather be part of, personally, and I'm willing to make a lesser, more honest, wage. But sure if you're chasing TC don't move there.
You moved to Ireland to avoid Obama built border detention centres😬 have you not see the camps outside most EU ports? Ireland currently has its highest number of homeless on record. Nearly 13k and the government has not helped them and their public health system is one of the worst in Europe. Good luck in Amazon they have high turnover there because its mostly aws oncall support.
They did Very good job of helping our firms to hide from taxes, you must give it to them
OP if I gave you an ice-cream sundae you’d complain that it was Monday. Ireland has many problems like lots of countries. However, you can’t lump the entire continent of Europe into an argument about Ireland and call it the same. There are no port camps in Ireland. The health care system does struggle...because it covers the entire population as a right. Yes, it rains. In other news grass is green. Like it, stay, don’t like it, leave. That’s also easy to do in Ireland because it’s an EU member btw. Come, work, be merry, get paid, contribute for all, these are socialist leaning values that underpin the country’s philosophy. Additionally, why shit over @jjj898 being at Amazon? It has churn worldwide, and there is more than oncall work. A great anger, I sense in you.
Brexit is for uk right? Ireland is a different country altogether
Absolutely correct. But brexit did affected Ireland as most of the country trading was/is with the UK. The UK got out of the customs union so now there is a lot of extra paperwork to be completed to be able to trade (increasing costs of goods and delaying deliveries). Also, most of the trading routes of Ireland with the rest of Europe passed through the UK. So, at least at the beginning, it caused a lot of delays and shortages. I believe that at the time this post was written, there was a lot of uncertainty on what would be the real impact of brexit in Ireland and that was causing a lot of speculation, making some of Ireland problems worse.

The Seattle of Europe then?
Worse.. it's a tiny city with poor public transport and very high cost of living and tax. I dont get why the Irish put up with it.
What’s the alternative? A pitchfork revolt against currency?
