Median Austin software engineer is like sub 90k.
Texas cost of living is like half of the central tech hubs on the west coast and ny
Because the median home in Austin is 50% lower than the median home in SF?
but these west coast guys font loom at thr cost of living they just want to say they make $165,000 when in reality they pocket less after living expenses. insurance, gas, food, housing, taxes

The only reason anyone would open an office in Texas is to save money on salaries. Homes cost less and no state income taxes. But, the social environment sucks and it’s Texas after all with all that that entails. You get what you pay for, and so do tech employers.
I actually like Seattle but the social environment in Austin is def a ton more fun.
lmao implying that Seattle is better than Austin socially.... at least people in Austin can hold a conversation
Really? The recent poll says opposite! I'm surprised to see number of people making > 200k
Austin is not a low COL. @OP, you’re right. How about you come work for us, get paid the same, if not more and have a truly low cost of living? COL is low enough you could fly back to party on Rainey street at Bangers pretty often.
Which company?
IBM is my guess
Something to note about median salaries... Top engineers get top pay, average engineers get average pay. 90s is on the low end of pay, at most Tech companies, for new grads. Austin is also the state capital, agencies have thousands of development jobs here at state salaries. Those state jobs definitely bring down the average salary. E.g. In Sacramento the average swe salary is 99, in Austin it is 94. Just the state tax difference makes the comp level in Austin higher.
Because everyone keeps talking it's a great city to live. Supply and demand. Next
