Feels like everyone on Blind likes to brag about TC, stress about Leetcoding to pass the interviews, etc. But plenty of people aren’t looking to switch to FAANG or a high-paying unicorn. So what’s up with that? Obviously WLB, meaningful work, personal ethics, etc. matters a lot. But doesn’t it feel like leaving money on the table if FAANG, and big unicorns like Uber or AirBnB, are paying these big >$300k salaries and are hiring huge amounts of people? So if you’re not interested in that, what keeps you from pursuing that? Personally, the high CoL of the Bay Area gives me TC FOMO. Feels like reasonable home ownership is impossible without the second income stream of RSUs. Competing with all these FAANG/unicorn homebuyers and the traditional bankers/doctors/lawyers makes me feel squeezed out, that I’ll end up house-poor. YOE: 6 TC: $180k
Most people who interview are rejected.
There’s always more companies to interview with.
And if they’re not rejected, they’re laid off after chasing autonomous driving fantasies.
Obviously you didn’t join Getaround for the TC. You guys turning the ship around?
I had a FAANG offer and other big tech offer, I picked the company willing to pay me the top dollar and it wasn’t FAANG. I’m paid to play.
Yahoo paying big these days?
You probably don’t want to hear me go into all the reasons why I throughly despise Google, Facebook, and Amazon. As for the others, I genuinely think Apple has stopped being an innovative company, and Netflix is a great way to spend the evening but not something I’d find personally satisfying. Uber and AirBnB have led to the rise of economic models I detest. But I’d totally work for MSFT or LinkedIn—I see definite value in those products. Point is, I care about what I do and I know I’m leaving money on the table, but you can make a good living doing great work at lots of other companies.
Why do you despise Google?
You can’t even click on a YouTube video without getting batshit recommendations from the algorithm™️ Google products kind of suck
not great at lc. not enough drive to make up the difference with time and energy. plenty of good jobs around with a good enough tc

There's such a thing as enough money to live the life you want. After that the money is just more numbers / earlier retirement. I have absolutely no interest in going back to the Bay, COL is indeed atrocious there and keeps you on the hamster wheel far longer than I am interested in.
Smart. Where’d your relocate to?
Anywhere else
