Any known drawbacks of charter schools (aparr from lucky draw) over public schools. My understanding says both are free.
In CA, There are public Charters run by the district vs private Charters with little oversight. Both of my kids are at different public Charters and we've been very happy with the quality. However there are mediocre ones too so definitely visit the schools individually.
It's really hard to have an opinion on charter schools without knowing what the alternatives in the district are. Most inner city charter schools definitely outperform inner city public schools which are politicized messes that are basically abused by their teachers unions. If you're in a district with good public schools already though you have less to gain from the charter lack of oversight/unions and more to lose.
Don't know why people hate on unions. They should be reformed not gotten rid of. Income inequality in the US and worker abuse is strongly correlated with the systematic destruction of organized labour. The bigger issue in public schools is large classroom sizes where teachers have to deal with both regular kids and kids with mental disabilities.
Unions by their very nature prioritize the worker over the organization they serve. When the organization is a car factory, we consider them a net good as long as they don't reduce productivity to the point of driving the car factory out of business. When the organization is public schools, this places them in direct conflict with the school's aim on educating the young. In districts where parents care, they fight hard to keep the district effective and push out bad teachers, and also make sure to keep their own child motivated. In districts where parents value education less, teachers unions have no counteracting force and can essentially run the district as they please. Bad teachers stay employed and are unable to provide extra guidance to kids who already are at a disadvantage because their parents don't care either. Teachers unions aren't all bad, but they're bad where it counts most.

Best LCOL or MCOL city?
They are public schools but with their own boards of directors and often without teachers unions. Research the board a bit to make sure the people on it aren’t doing anything too sketchy and verify that the school has good teachers/outcomes just like with any public school
Thanks. Research would mean talking to parents, I believe. Since greatschools won't reveal the sketchiness.
