If I recall correctly, Vine was super famous at one point and video were super viral among other social media. But eventually they shut down. While Dubsmash is still rocking, it looks like they've cloned TikTok. Despite being in the market first. On the other hand, TikTok is wildly popular to the point YouTube and Instagram are trying to replicate it. Conceptually all the three apps are quite similar. They all had a decent user base and they all took off the ground. So why did Vine and Dubsmash fail? Any business folk wanna share their insights? #tiktok #vine #dubsmash
It’s the algorithm.
Algorithm is just: data in + ML objective optimization = next iteration of model. This model gets more user growth and more data. Rinse and repeat. Anyone could’ve done it.
Lol. It isn’t some text/hashtag based model. Look at your for you page. They’re training on the video content.
Having an entire country backing you financially may help. At some point I couldn't watch a single Youtube video without a TikTok comercial popping up
This post is longish but does a great job at explaining the different approach: https://turner.substack.com/p/the-rise-of-tiktok-and-understanding
Timing is a major factor to this. When Vine was out, FB was still cool for teens and Insta and Snap were the new cool apps. Short video sharing wasn’t ready for prime time. TT came out at the right time when FB is not cool at all, Instagram is meh and Snap is saturated. The rise of vlogger fame and instagram millionaires (influencers) fueled the need for a new medium. And it’s just super entertaining and the UI is pretty impressive. So content is really what catapulted it.
