A lot of people get PIPed or leave for whatever reason. From my bootcamp cohort maybe half was left after two years. For me I was feeling bored with the project, not vibing with the team and had some personal difficulties (feeling down after a breakup) that didn’t help. But most importantly there’s a get-promoted-or-gtfo culture. Depending on how good your manager is and how good you are with politics, visibility, review cycles your luck might vary. In retrospect I was not good at these things. I kind of treated it like a normal job but if I went back I’d knew that it is very competitive and the people who succeed put in 10 hour days and are not shy about their achievements.

  • Because it was hard to get meaningful work done. I had strong reviews from my managers and peers, but the work I was doing didn’t live up to my own standards.

    • I spent most of my time navigating the organization and wrangling the chaos to make relatively small amounts of progress. It felt like crawling through mud. Also it felt like chasing metrics for the sake of chasing metrics rather than making things that people meaningfully would want to use.

YMMV though, I suspect many big tech mega corps are like this.
