Why do Amazon benefits suck?

Amazon is one of the biggest tech companies and yet I feel like their benefits are worse than some smaller tech companies and they don't seem to take care of their employees as much. No free lunch, no free prime and you have to accrue PTO which seems pretty outdated to me. I get the leadership principles and frugality and stuff but I think investing in keeping employees happy is pretty important.

Quite simply, because they can with the model Amazon has built in the house of Jeff and TBH, Amazon’s benefits are competitive if you compare them to the broader SP500 index companies. Our healthcare plan isn’t the best but it is by far from the worst. Also, the aura of free food and drink perks wear off quickly. It seems a better benefit in attracting talent vs retaining talent.

I guess but they're not really on par with the rest of FAANG. And for me personally the free food saves the hassle of bringing food from home or having to spend money on food everyday so it's useful. The lack of free prime and accrued PTO really surprised me

Lol. So you think that free food and drinks only attract talent and does not retain talent? Amazon has the highest attrition rate among top companies

Probably because they have hundreds of thousands of nearly minimum wage workers and typically benefit programs are designed at a company level. I’ve seen similar patterns across finance institutions - those with large numbers of branch level employees typically have worse benefits than those that only have higher paid employees, like buy side firms for example. I suspect at least some of their programming is explained by this.

Their bonus and stock is at its best. Who cares about benefits

Google topCon Jul 5, 2019

What bonus?

Amazon bCxp50 Jul 6, 2019

Yeah, the age-old "stock appreciation makes up for it" argument that doesn't pass muster if you actually run the numbers. Amazon has had a hell of a run, but it isn't THAT special. Most of the market is up over the past 5+ years, and several other tech companies (MSFT, NFLX, and FB all come to mind) have had 300%+ runs of their own.

I do not feel their benefits are that bad. They might not have "free food" as a listed benefit. But i have known teams and orgs that have many weekly events which have food. Also, there is always free food is some or the other buildings daily. And with the pay/stocks you will be receiving there, i do not think you will mind spending 15$ 3 times a week for lunch. The other benefits are almost at par, if not better than, the other FAANG, imo.

Google dhhh Jul 5, 2019

What other benefit does Amazon have? I don't think I've heard of any perks other than bananas

Qualtrics juul4 Jul 5, 2019

The "free food" benefits are there but based on the team you are on.

Jeff convinced everyone that frugality is a value.

Amazon Zzzamznbye Jul 5, 2019

It isn't for him. He spent 30b on a divorce. Name someone at Amazon who lost 30b and wasn't fired.

WCI One, LLC. soori OP Jul 5, 2019

I think the frugality thing is such BS. Like sure it's a great value but like it doesn't apply to everything. Giving their employees something as simple as prime really won't break the bank. It's more about the gesture tbh

Snapchat rThn06 Jul 5, 2019

He lost much less than what he could have. Your analogy is wrong. He did not lose 30bn of amazon money, he lost his personal assets

Accruing PTO is better than so-called Unlimited PTO. Don't kid yourself.

Valassis GNu002 Jul 5, 2019

Only if you have carryover and buyout.

WCI One, LLC. soori OP Jul 5, 2019

I currently have unlimited and I just took 10 days off for a vacation. And others in the company have taken time as well. My company encourages employees to take at least 15 days a year.

Oracle mnP7$a Jul 5, 2019

Don’t care about free food. But a company that has measly 401k match, which they take away if you leave within three years, is pathetic. And don’t get me started on salary cap, target comp cap bulshit. I never reply to amazon recruiters for their shitty pay structure.

The level of entitlement in tech is astounding

WCI One, LLC. soori OP Jul 5, 2019

Why's the entitlement? If other companies do it I'm just wondering why Amazon isn't on par. And I think taking care of employees is an important part of a company.
