Why do American telecom companies hate each other?!?!

Just out of pure curiosity why do telecom companies use so much negative advertisement? I used to briefly live in Korea and maybe there was a language barrier but I don't remember telecom companies using so much negative ads, and I certainly don't remember them suing each other. Why is this practice so common in the US telecom industry? I mean I work at Nike and it's not like we are constantly comparing our products with adidas in our ads? Anyways just wanted to know how this practice came about, and whether it's really necessary. Do employees at these telecom companies also sense this rivalry at work?

I’m guessing it’s a legal thing. In EU I haven’t seen this done either and think they might be able to sue for defamation, since I’ve also heard that laws surrounding that are much stricter there

Nike has its own fan base, adidas has its own. But ATT or T-Mobile or Verizon don’t. Whoever has the most valuable service wins. That’s why they talk shit about each other’s reception.. coverage.. bill transparency.. reputation.. price.. and blah blah.

Because telecom, unlike sneakers, has a finite market for consumers and we’re at a point of saturation in the market for typical wireless services. But overall, it’s a very competitive industry and no one wants to feel like they’re at any more of a disadvantage than they might have been before. You’ll see this with spectrum ownership, marketing and advertising, etc. Sprint is suing AT&T is because they’re trying to be sneaky and make it look like they’ve started deploying a network technology to their network and devices that aren’t anywhere close to supporting. To the average consumer, they’re going to think that AT&T is now offering a network service that the other carriers don’t have when in reality nothing has changed except for a “sticker”. So that could cause churn and financial damage to the companies that are actually working to provide that service, which is why Sprint is trying to sue for damages.

Actually AT&T nor Verizon do any type of ad that portrait a negative image about other competitors, we leave that to the smaller players.

Only T-Mobile CEO acts as a belligerent guy who bad mouths the competitors. It is his brand to be not normal. Grown up VZ and ATT executives never do that. VZ executives internally tell the employees to treat competitors with respect in all forums.
