I have interviewed at goog and FB twice over the last 4 years. At Uber, Snap, Tableau, DropBox, Stripe, Apple. I didnt make any of them. FB keeps pinging me, guessing that means i was close. Apple was non technical, not sure why i failed. I am considered a great manager in my team, get good reviews and working in an innovative area. what am i doing wrong? i have only worked at microsoft, wondering if that works against me. don’t have a clue what i should change. i like microsoft but want to try something outside. help please. clarification: i did get an offer from tableau but it was too junior and was a big pay cut. addition: google recruiter said my package was sent to HC and they went way over, could not reach consesnsus. Manager and design interviews were good, but messed up 1 coding. The other companies didnt give me feedback.
Interviews are super tough now. Lot of competition. Lot of candidates available.
Then why is Amazon stuffed to the gills with crappy SDMs? You’d think there’s a major shortage of people who want to “manage” instead of do the grunt work.
Yeah trying to understand the new world. When I graduated 22 years ago, Microsoft had the toughest interviews and I easily made it. I had 7 offers at the time. Now I can’t get 1 decent offer.
22 yrs at Microsoft?
Leetcode treadmill raises the bar. You are up against people who have grinded hundreds of questions. Interviews are garbage. They shouldnt be predictable and thus something you study one specific skill for hours on end.
Age i guess. If most interviewers from FB ang G are kiddos they will like to screw you.
How many yoe? And it likely does work against you unfortunately.
22 yoe with masters.
Aren’t u loaded at this point?
Not really. TC is 475.
I have similar yoe and interviewed over a couple years with maybe a dozen top players in sf and the valley. All rejects then one went really well at a fang and got a great offer. I felt like I got a little better with each interview. It is discouraging and I was usually down on myself for a week after a rejection, but just shook it off and kept trying. Keep going and something will land, keep reading about management and improving.
I was in this same exact boat. Chose Tableau and have been loving it.
Try amazon. Very fair interview for mature and experienced. We don’t discriminate.
