Last time I had been to Southeastcon they were pushing Watson IoT like their lives depended on it at the expense of ruining the event. This time I am at DevNexus and they have half the speaker slots hogged just tricking people with nice seeming presentation titles into listening to the same Quarkus pitch with the same dumb fucking catchphrase and splash screen I am so mad these morons keep ruining community events
...this is literally how marketing works? While event marketing is a different beast, the underpinnings come from the same place. Unified messaging is a must, telling the same story at multiple events is a must. IBM likely has Watson IoT as one of its core platforms this year, and all IoT suffers from the same problem: what can it do for you? At the enterprise level, you don’t buy IoT solutions off the shelf, you need a solution advisor (aka sales) to craft a solution for you. Additional issue here is talking to the right people; you can’t talk to the CTO or CIO because they don’t always understand the benefits at a granular level and just want to know price, so you have to hit up the IT movers and shakers who will advocate for the product inclusion.
Except as one of those movers the amount of memorized catch phrases vs informed advice is having the opposite effect on me
What the hell is Watson? Is it a man, machine, surgeon, search engine, chatbot, robot, voice assistant, ml engine? According to IBM, it is everything and in reality it is nothing. All half baked marketing as far I could see. IBM itself doesn't know what Watson is 🤦
IBM really needs to tap into more growth markets to stay in the game. Marketing is the one thing you can simply throw money at it and get some benefit. But your technology strategy choices/investments are not something you can brute force and easier to make bad bets.
Thank you! ^Get this guy our CEO position please
Their aggressive because IoT at IBM is underfunded and we’re losing to competitors. So they market the shit out of a half baked product suite. Most of our top sails guys are jumping to Microsoft. We need the new leadership ASAP to start funding departments like our CAPEX heavy competitors with long term vision and not quarter to quarter Wall Street worshipping.
Like all of our marketing efforts, they reek of desperation.

At least I won't be pitched some dumb ambitiously half assed 3E product with the hopes I will be tricked into swapping my whole dev stack. They are pitching some bundle with Spring boot and a bunch of IBM garbage as an alternative to regular spring boot and their whole argument is "it runs faster hurr durr"
