Why do PayPal and eBay have Java language requirements

Most companies these days don’t seem to bother about coding language. But PayPal and eBay seem to be very stuck on candidates having experience in Java and no other OO language (for backend roles) Is there any solid reason for that?

Because of legacy platform even though there are golang and nodejs now

Java will do anything better than nodejs and 90% of things better than Go

JVM startup time disagrees Also does needless complexity. Java has a culture of over complicating things. Source: I've used both Go and Java in prod fulltime

But my point is that if c# has been my strong hold for past couple of years and I have basic familiarity with Java, I feel confident that I can pick up any OO language and corresponding frameworks. Is that not considered enough ?

You are correct, if are strong in one OO language you can pick up another one fairly quickly. However, company might want to wait for you to learn knee language while you also have to learn knew codebase. Besides, you can quickly become good, but it takes years to become really good and company might need language experts now. Just a thought

There’s a reason they are lagging behind

How long you been away from news? PayPal has been growing like crazy ever since they split from eBay.

Congrats PayPal 👏👏

Only some teams have that requirement

Microsoft jfDN72 OP Oct 29, 2018

Would you be able to suggest the teams that don’t hold Java as requirement ? I am interested to apply.

eBay kab2929 Oct 29, 2018

eBay and PayPal is full of old timers, who only know JAVA. They make sure they do not let anything else added to the portfolio. NodeJs was shoved through their throats. Python was killed brutally, everything is tied to old infrastructure CAL and DAL at ebay, and that is just a shit show. You cannot put anything in production unless it in compliant to a specific template of language, version and technology.

Started a year ago with no Java experience. It just depends on the hiring manager. Unfortunately, most probably still care a lot about Java on the resume

Microsoft jfDN72 OP Oct 31, 2018

No experience atall or no Java experience ?

eBay Maqu16 Oct 31, 2018

No Java

PayPal TNbp70 Nov 2, 2018

Because most of the internal services are built in Java and there are strong standards in place, it makes a difference if people know Java already.

PayPal FMGY12 Nov 4, 2018

Depends on the hiring manager. They want the folks hired to start hitting the road soon and are not willing to spend the ramp up time due to impending product requirements
